OK, been trying out a naval scenario which really shows how boxed in we are at the moment.

1. With a Mustang, you can't start a mission on a carrier deck but you can end a mission there (with moving zone, under this altitude, under this speed and what not).

You can however start a mission right next to a carrier, like you've just taken off.

And landing a Mustang on a carrier is WAY easier than a Sabre. I'll make a video ;)

2. With a Sabre...see above (although, I wouldn't ask folks to learn landing a Sabre on a carrier deck)

3. With a Huey, you are allowed to start a mission at the deck of a carrier but an AI-Huey can't land on a carrier (even of you make the carrier stop). The AI-Huey will just circle, gain altitude and then run out of gas. So OK then, you can use the Huey in a naval campaign but only if controlled by a player.

What's also limiting naval operations is the fact that there's no repairs available on deck and no radio communications with a carrier.

The repair part could be taken care of by ignoring the usual procedure and just make any aircraft landed repaired after 30 seconds or similar. We could just run the script for repair without animation. Instant repair, no hazzle.

The communications part might be tougher as a carrier usually moves and that might prove a problem for navigational assistance (in the code)

To summarize:

We're limited by ones and zeros, yes/no arguments in code. I'd love to get the easiest parts squared away. If anyone knows how to edit aircraft for "carrier spawning", please share :)

And here's the naval pron :pilotfly:

Navy Mustang

Navy "Fury"

Marine Huey

I've been able to turn the Mustang Navy now, to spawn on carriers that is. But to be honest, I think it's sort of futile to expect people to learn the Sabre the same way. I mean, without a hook you gotta stay razor sharp and be lucky to land. Or maybe I can test things out a bit more, maybe set the carrier to max speed or something (did my "trials" on 20kts).

Anyways, with the Mustang it's a lot easier. You can learn to land with it on 11kts speed of carrier and 7m/s headwind. Here's the clip showing me spawning on the carrier :)
