Hi guys,

Modern jets are still fitted with guns, specially after the lessons learned from the vietnam war.

But when was the last gun kill recorded from a dogfight?

I can only find the one from vietnam. If the IR missile are so reliable, why didn't they remove canon now ?

A. Second guessing the future of air combat proved to be a horrible mistake once, so they won't be doing that again, at least not with the gun.

B. The guns on fighters can easily be used to strafe ground targets since modern militaries are forced to use most modern fighters as multi-role ground pounders as well.

Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.

I saw a guncam shot of a Mirage III (IDF) being shot down by a MiG-21, RN Sea Harrier shot down an A-4 with guns. These were what I found superficially, I'm sure there are more.

If you count incidents other than dogfights between fighters, a few drug smugglers have been gunned down recently, and before that a Sea Harrier shot down a C-130 - because the IR missiles wouldn't lock!

Sensors fail more often than bullets. No good countermeasures have been created against those :D

No dogfight hit but I can recommend reading "Viper Pilot" by Dan Hampton. He used his cannon to successfully engage APC's and Trucks during a heavy gunfight between US Marines which were pinned down by Iraqi armed forces (2003).

Several vehicles were destroyed and they retreated. So the gun is still a lifesaver (if you are one the right side of the gun :music_whistling:).

I remember reading that, it's a good book :pilotfly:

It's always good to have a fallback - and as already pointed out, you can always strafe ground-targets if you're a mutli-role aircraft. Always plan for what to do if/when your current system borks up.

Of course, lugging around hardware that you never use, uses up fuel, so there are merits on both sides.

I think it's like hiking in the wild with a swiss army knife. In 95% you won't need it but on this one special trip you left it at home, you will damn yourself forever

Gun's are also a good poker card. You might be flying clean but you never know if its got rounds loaded from the outside.

Not so much. Anyone assuming an enemy aircraft is not armed is a fool in the first place.
