Hi. Apologies for not searching too hard for an answer.

I'm about to upgrade a laptop that has failed and am looking at a Mac notebook as I need it to record on GarageBand. I was always under the impression that Macs were no good for gaming but have found out that you can get xplane 10 for Mac as long as you have a dedicated 2g video card.

So when it comes to the DCS products will they run smoothly on Mac? And can I download them directly from the site (for Mac I mean as opposed to pic)

I'm prepared to spend an extra $1000 on a Mac pro with. NIVIDIA GeForce GT 750m (2g) purely for the DCS products, and XPlane. It comes with 16G of dedicated ram. I'm not really a gamer as such.

So hence my paranoia.....

Is there anything I need to think of when ordering this Mac???

Cheers.

DCS doesn't exist for Mac. You will have to run Windows on it to use DCS.

Ok. Thanks.

Does this know I me out of the oark Mac wise????

I understand you can run windows - and I'll be doing it purely for DCS but I've head that a dual OS can cause dramas. Or am I just creating my own......

Your feedback is appreciated.

Hi triantobebrian I have not had experiences running DCS on a laptop, but I do run it on an iMac (spec below) and have done for over 4 years now. Granted it is not the most powerful of machines and could do with a bit more graphical power, and I haven't ventured into multiplayer, don't consider myself that good and I'm sure the mac would fold. I am actually looking at the desktop Mac Pro, very powerful and very expensive, can't afford it just yet. All Apple machines come with Bootcamp to run Windows, I have run Windows this way for 4 years and I can quite honestly say that Bootcamp runs Windows better than anything Microsoft that I have owned, never had any blue screens or crashes. I use Bootcamp for gaming on an SSD and OS X for everything else, and all runs smoothly.

Does Apple sell their O/S separately??

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Yes, they are downloadable via the Apple App Store. You can download back versions as well. I have been lucky since owning a Mac that all my upgraded versions, (two) have been free to download, but I am sure the next one I will have to pay for, but then the highest cost for a new version I have seen was only £21.99.

An expensive 'PC' vs a slate/tablet/surface and the old Nokia brand, that's not really a fair comparison is it?

To the op, is Garage Band a requirement? It's just it's going to be an expensive setup just to play DCS and use GB.

In the long run a medium powered Mac laptop and a medium powered Windows PC would probably give you more bang for your buck. Especially if you build your own PC.

Hi all. Thanks for the help.

90% of this system will be GarageBand - I'm over trying to use cube base or the iPad - but knowing (now) about the Nvidia 2G video graphics card and boot camp I can see this system will definitely run games. I loved A10 - but didn't really get into it as my system struggled just a little. Thankfully it died. I can't wait to get some of the other games in the DCS series.

A couple of last questions... Best place to buy Windows 7 - I'm assuming these games are no good on Windows 8.

And any of you guys car sim players? What's the best non arcadey one out there. Sick of Xbox crash and bash style ones.....

Cheers.

I don't think you can officially get Windows 7 oem anymore. The ones you find on the bay may not be 100% legit.

I don't have any experience with W8 in a gaming environment, but I don't see why you would have any problems.

If you can wait, or stick with 8 for a few months, you will be rewarded with free 10, which looks to be back on form.

To clarify, if you don't go OEM it will be expensive. I think you would qualify for OEM with a new Mac.

You may find home premium full retail knocking around, but I haven't found one from a reputable reseller in a while. I wouldn't trust a license from a 3rd party seller on the likes of Amazon and eBay.

I have used a MacBook Pro 15" Retina Mid 2012 with a 2.6GHz i7 and a Nv GT-650M with 1GB VRAM for over 1 year for DCS with a boot camped Win7-64 Ult with no major problems but performance is not superb but it works. The newer models have a 750M GT with 2 GB, maybe a touch better but the real problem is the <3GHz CPU.

The limit is the CPU, you must get the fastest CPU Apple sells, the rest is OK, 16GB DDR3, PCIe Flash, nice and fast, if there weren't the slow CPU....

I would NOT buy it for gaming but if you use it mainly for Mac specific things and want "some" DCS aside it will work perfectly if you know how to handle bootcamp and not mess with boot sector. Windows embedded Backup software has limited success on boot camped installations, that should be mentioned as well.

The backup works...just restore won't like your bootcamped drive and fail if you want to repair or reinstall from image etc... it works inside a working Windows to recover files and folders but won't help you much to recover from disaster.

Maybe that is a bit clearer
