And it would probably have to be a radically overhauled engine to support such a thing but... hey its a beautiful idea.
The new DCS 2.0 Engine does support a global map. The problem is no developer has yet stepped up to put in the time and effort to build it.

I am in complete agreement, though. Give us basic land masses. Let me fly from England to Nevada for a red Flag meet.

I mean a Photo real map with 30,000 foot resolution can't take take up that much hard drive space, can it? -Woog

I say bring it on. Just because you have global coverage doesn't mean you need detailed global coverage. Look at any MSFS or X-Plane and you will see basic textures and landclass outside of concentrated areas, but allowing for coordinate based terrain enhancements.

Think of it this way: perhaps in the future somebody develops a map of Turkey that adjoins Georgia. With a world map, you would be able to have Georgian and Turkish forces meet with both maps conjoined; you wouldn't need to keep it all on one map or the other.

As long as the project is properly scoped, there is no downside.

To people that believes that a world map will kill performance I want to tell them to go and read how an efficient graphics engine work using visblocks, far clip distance settings, level of details for distance (LOD) and many optimizations that allow an old game like FSX have the entire world rendered as you pass by. There's even games that have procedural generation of terrain which make them virtually infinite!!

Obviously, flying in highly populated zones like Europe will hit the fps if the cities are highly detailed, nearby and you're flying with a far distance detailed option enabled

All DCS needs is a generic world terrain with at least the correct elevation mesh and continents

My rig specs:

Intel Core i7 4770 @3.4Ghz // Corsair 16GB DDR3 // MoBo Asus Z87K // HDD 1TB 7200RPM // eVGA Nvidia GTX 760GT 2GB DDR5 // LG 3D 47" 1920x1080 // Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS // Saitek Combat Pro Pedals // Thrustmaster MFD Cougar pack // PS3 Eye + FTNOIR

As 7rooper and others said. DCS needs a world map and it is a chance it will get one in the end. Matt Wagner said the map currently in works are going to expand and merge... eventually. Earth is really curved in DCS W2.0 so... it will come.

DCS World need a world map (imho) to really get in the game and take on FSX. I think ED is carefully planing just that. DCS will always be a non alternative for many FSX players and Devs because of limited map(s).

It doesn't matter if some people don't see the good in a world map and are happy with current limited map(s)... DCS needs to grow exponentially at some point and having just "small" combat zones will not do it.

As for detail... it will come. step by step. Who knows... maybe at some point we will have access to map building tools and each of us add a patch of grass in a world map and slowly we will help ED bring it to full detail. This will mean collective work that is submitted for acceptance to ED and then included in public release. A world map cold also import "on the fly" data from Google and generically populate pretty accurate the roads, rivers, power lines, railways, sea, forests and terrain elevation... in the future maybe.

I'd rather have quality over quantity. A deep lake rather than a shallow ocean if you will.

The idea of what constitutes *quality* is subjective.

You're making the assumption that your perspective is self evident and shared by all. ;)

"A true 'sandbox flight sim' requires hi-fidelity flyable non-combat utility/support aircraft."

Wishlist Terrains - Bigger maps

Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!

Citation please? I don't remember reading about map merging.
