trooph Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Hi guys. I recently upgraded from i5 5670k and a r9 280x to a i7 4790k and msi gtx 970 4g. But i see no significant fps jump... One thing is that i get 45-52 fps on the ground while in air i get the same. I turned everything off or app controled in Nvidia control panel. THe wierd thing is that i never jump above 20% cpu usage and 40% gpu usage while not streaming... when streaming my OBS takes around another 25% cpu usage rest stays the same. I use MSI afterburner for monitoring. Average FPS while in game (fairly populated server ACG WW2 one) i get around 50 fps in air which is even worse than on previous setup Full specs i7 4790k @ 4.5 1.285v MSI Gtx 970 G4 @ stock Asrock z87 pro4 16gb Partiot viper 3 CL11 2133mhz (4x4 gb) PC runs in performance mode same for gpu No CPU throttling ever recorded Any ideas guys?
Nooch Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 (edited) Weird. I upgraded from a r9 280x to a gtx 770 and definitely saw a performance improvement. Have you tried reinstalling all your cpu related mobo drivers? As strange as it may seem, I know the chipset driver is especially important in terms of being able to use max cpu performance. powstaniec Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Hi, still low fps? Did you upgraded your mainboard or it` s still the same? i5-4670K @Stock - 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1600 - GigaByte GTX 750TI 2GB - GigaByte HD3 - Z87 - Logitech Attack 3 :megalol:
JayPee Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I've got that same CPU/GPU combo and my DCS runs almost always at 60 FPS constant with a bunch of graphics mods incl. SweetFX. Not saying it's the only solution but you should really get rid of that old Z87 mobo. I'm surprised the CPU even works on a Z87. I've got a very nice Z97 mobo which is basically designed with the sole purpose of unleashing your CPU. i7 4790K: 4.8GHz, 1.328V (manual) MSI GTX 970: 1,504MHz core, 1.250V, 8GHz memory
BitMaster Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Just came to my mind while reading your OP, you raised the Volatge and that means that you have a higher TDP as a result and if you can't keep it COOL enough the CPU will throttle down considerably to stay inside the safe heat zone. Run prime95, let it sweat, and read the values in your monitoring sw. If it throttles down you have a heat issue. The CPU you have is a good performer but a bad overclocker ! Intel saved some money on the heat spreader that connects the die to the cover plate, with it's new 6 and 8 core models they again use solder method to increase heat transfer, as with the 2xxxk versions, yours uses an inferior technique and thus has a little heat problem, regardless if water-cooled, liquid N cooled or just air cooled, you cannot overcome this and must not overlook this limitation. BitMaster Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 If I am right with what I wrote above, rerun prime95 with lower voltage settings until it performs stable with stable clock speeds. Check the net for OC guidelines from the vendor. I used the Asus guide to OC the 2600k on my board and BANG, 4.8 rock solid with almost stock voltage. trooph Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Hi Guys. Thanks for answering me:) Yeah that mobo is old but it does run that cpu quite good. It doesnt throttle. When running aida64 (prime can do damage to haswell) it stays below 70degrees celsius on all cores(65 most of the time) Also i run latest bios otherwise that cpu wouldnt start :) My issue here is that both cpu and gpu arent used in full. About that Oc. Its better than turbo mode as it runs 4ghz on same voltage. I didnt even touch it:) and i bet o can hit4.7 4.8 with my h80i and a bitod tweaking:) I will test few more things this evening to rule out hardware issues Also i will try to run dcs with different setting. Maybe it will help. Cheers guys. T.
X-Alt Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Went from a 7970GHz to a 290, and I didn't see a huge increase either, I guess DCS is more CPU bound than anything else, but the game is quite playable for me. Remember kids, brush your teeth and use FLOOD mode. |FX8320@4.8GHz|XFX DD R9 290 @1180\1600|8GB DDR3-1866|HX750|Corsair 750D|Crosshair V Formula-Z| Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, help me pls!|
trooph Posted March 24, 2015 Author Posted March 24, 2015 So yeah... DCS runs at 22-29% cpu usage GPU usage is normal. I still get not really fluent FPS even over sea...;/
BitMaster Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I think you should go for a "tabula rasa" = wipe the table and do it all over. You easily spend another dozen hours and may not find the cause. If your SSD is large enough, or if u have 2 or more drives, in stall Windows agasin, install Chipset drivers and vital MB drivers, GPU driver, update Windows, install DCS vanilla and give it a try from there. Use Windows rollback function to make hooks you can go back to if u think a former settings/driver/etc was better and it wont deinstall etc.. Q: Is it official that prime95 DAMAGES the new Haswell ? Lucky Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 (edited) I went from the 20's and 30's FPS with an AMD 8350 Vishera and 7970 to 60's and up with my i7 4790k and 1 GTX 970. Running 2 GTX 970's in SLI actually reduced FPS back to the 30's Edited March 26, 2015 by Lucky Corrected info [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Lian Li 011 Dynamic Evo, Core i9 11900K @ 5.0GHz, Corsair H150i CPU cooler, Asus Prime Z590-A, Radeon RX6800 XT64GB, Team T-Force Delta DDR4 3600, Corsair RM1000X PSU, Win 11 x64

Good to know if I have to OC such a CPU in the future as I have some friends whom I have built such CPU based rigs. None of them is overclocked ( yet ). Yes, as always, more Volts = higher risc of damaging and one should not count on the self protection curcuit, if there is one at all for that matter. trooph Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) I usually play on ACG WW2 server, its an airquake server... Still cant get my FPS up to decent lvl. Especialy when flying. My heaven benchmark runs ok. WIll run other benchmarks to determine if there is something wrong. Could some of U guys post me ur nvidia CP settings for DCS? Cheers in andvance. Edit: I just did few runs with Firestrike benchmark and heaven benchmark. All seem to be fine. There must be something messed up with my dcs... http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/6459423 My score.
