The movie, Final Countdown

4. Any backstories of seeing the Top Gun movie for the first time?

Large part of the reason I joined the Navy and Naval Aviation. Ended up working on the P-3C (when do we get it :) ?)

5. Did any of you really fly/RIO in an F-14?

No but I launched one (Line Shack work) out of GTMO (back before it is what it is now)

1. How did you learn about DCS?

Reconnected with playing flight Sims this year after a long layoff. Used to play everything.

2. When did you first learn about the F-14?

My uncle who was a pilot and Engineer for Sikorsky found out I loved aviation and would always send books and models.

3. What made you fall in love with the F-14?

The movie Final Countdown

4. Any backstories of seeing the Top Gun movie for the first time?

My older sister 17 at the time had to go see it in the theater because of Tom Cruise...I had to sell my soul to get her to take her 11 yr old brother with her!

5. Did any of you really fly/RIO in an F-14?

No really wish I had. I've seen and sat in them in person many times including a Tiger Cruise I got to take on the Carl Vinson in 1989. Got to spend time on the flight deck while they were launching and recovering aircraft. It was amazing! Got launched off in a C2 at the end and flew into San Diego. The coolest things I did as a kid!

1. Searching for a decent flight simulation for years, I find it, purchased a new computer and enjoy a very good fly sim for the first time in 8-10 years (my cracked a-10 cuba CD finally died, and thinking about it I cant remember what i have done with my MS sidewinder).

2. Maybe 25 years ago, I was very Young!

3. Look pretty fast, even on a carrier deck with the wings at 68 degree!

4. It was awesome 25 years ago, now its more like : ''no you cant talk like that maneuvering it this way!'' And : ''hose him, HOSE HIM YOU D..B S..t B.....d!''

5. NO WAY!

Hmm....

Nearly all aviation movies are pretty unrealistic, they kind of need to be. Real air combat would be very difficult for the uninitiated to follow or understand.

Flight of the Intruder isn't too bad, but the strike concept may be easier to depict. Midway seems decent, but WWII style combat is close range and works better in film version.

Speed and Angels was a good film, but they explained a lot up front. Still, they depicted air combat in largely Top Gun terms (close range and chasing the enemy).

There are certainly many movies that I have not seen and may be better, but these come to mind.

Flight of the Intrude was really awesome. I wonder how it clicked with the casual audience. Speed and Angels is still my favorite weekend pass time, but i consider it more od a documentary then a movie.

WW1 and WW2 should be easier to present on screen, (especially WW1) but even they are seldom made with a satisfying degree of authenticity. I recall i did like the Flyboys a bit, but not being all that familiar with the early birds, i really could not tell how off they were on their facts

1. Flight simming enthusiasm started with shareware SU-25 Stormovik in 1992. Then Falcon 3.0 and Flanker series/LOMAC/to DCS.

2. Watching Top Gun advertising at the Curtis Mathis store at the mall-it replayed the dogfight scene at the end on repeat.

3. just the look, period. The F-14 says, hello I'm a beast, and you aren't.

4. first time was on TV, I saw a commercial at my cousin's house in Wisconsin, and urged my dad to drive home as fast as he could so I could watch it.

5. No, flown on plenty of helos. I did get the awesome privilege of being treated to a personal unrestricted take-off out of Andrews AFB when a VF-31 F-14D left to head back to Oceana. The crew stayed on the deck, lit burners once gear was up as they passed me, then went vertical between the 113th ANG hangars and Air Force One hangars.....showed an AFB how its done right! It was windy that day so my eyes were watering once it was over...

1. I guess I found out about lock on modern air combat first, but I was playing other flying related games before that. I was looking around on Youtube for funny videogame aircraft crashes and Lockon came up. I thought "hey that looks fun" so I purchased it in 2009. After that I got Flaming Cliffs 2 and loved that. Then I found out about DCS A-10C Warthog, being the most realistic air combat simulator ever. That really brought my attention and ever since then I have been buying and learning DCS products.

2. I first learned about the tomcat when a friend showed me a model of an F-14D and how it could swing its wings. I really didn't care at the time because it looked weird and it was big and clunky, so I didn't think it would be a challenge for other dogfighters.

3. What made me fall in love with the F-14 was a documentary I watched a while ago (cant remember what it was called), but after seeing that I researched a little more on it and found that it was capable of doing a lot more things than I thought. What really makes me love it is the two seats the wide body and the swing wings. I think its an absolutely beautiful aircraft.

4. What made me watch Topgun for the first time was everyone saying "goodness gracious great balls of fire!" and me being embarrassed not knowing where it was from :)

5. I have never flown in the back seat of an F-14, but I would love to :D

1. How did you learn about DCS?
I'm one of the old schoolers who picked up Su-27 Flanker for DOS!

2. When did you first learn about the F-14?
As young as I can remember, I was playing with a die cast F-14.

3. What made you fall in love with the F-14?
See above. Just a cool bird all around.

4. Any backstories of seeing the Top Gun movie for the first time?
Not really. However, I wanted to be a Navy pilot since 1982, but when Top Gun came out the only thing I could think of was "these guys (with the exception of Goose, RIP) are a bunch of a$$holes!" I discovered later that there are more guys are like Goose than like Iceman, and nobody like Maverick would make it through primary flight training.

5. Did any of you really fly/RIO in an F-14?
No, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. I got what is unaffectionately known as the "NAMI Whammy", where I was told I had 20/40 vision and had to go into the back seat. This was also the time that the A-6 was being retired and the B/Ns were being converted to Prowlers and Tomcats, so the Tomcat RIO slots were few and far between.

One thing I never got sick of on deployment, though, is going up to Vulture's Row to watch air ops. Watching Tomcats get launched was always the coolest, even though the B models don't engage afterburner on the cat like the As did.

Gaaaaaaahhhh!! So close!

I'm going to the Rockford air show to see their F-22, but I really wish they had a tomcat.

Having both at an air show would be amazing to see.

1. How did you learn about DCS?

I hadn't played LOMAC for years and was looking for instructions on how to get it to run in Win 7, and found out about the release of Flamming Cliffs 3 for DCS.

2. When did you first learn about the F-14?

I read about it in the manual for my first flight sim ever, F19 Stealth Fighter by Microprose. I was born in 1984 so I must've been a little boy!

3. What made you fall in love with the F-14?

AIM-54 Phoenix.

4. Any backstories of seeing the Top Gun movie for the first time?

I was disappointed because the bad guys were flying F-5s and calling them Mig-28s!

5. Did any of you really fly/RIO in an F-14?

Nope.
