Reducing the number of missiles on the Ka-50 (not air-to-air missiles!)

What I'd really like is the ability to carry less than 12 Vikhr (e.g. carrying only four on the two hardpoints). This was often done during the flight testing phase. I don't know if it would ever be done in combat - but then the aircraft has seen little operational use.

Does anyone know if the Ka-50 ever would carry less than its full load operationally?

I would love to see it also for Su-25T. Only four vikhrs per rack were also carried with much reduced drag/weight.

Or when the supply is low, or if there are a lot of battles in a short period.

I'd never use it (Vikhrs > Performance), but it would be nice to have the option.

It is useful in some scenarios like COIN, or situations where you need to hit only a few enemy AA emplacements in mountains where performance matters, KA-50s used in Chechnya normally carried only 2x2 vikhrs on outer hardpoints. The same goes with Su-25T, vikhrs to eliminate enemy AAA units and the rest can be destroyed by subsequent strike of Su-25A with unguided munitions. As far as I know, in RL operations you don't hang everything you can on an aircraft, but rather send more better performing aircraft with lighter loads. So having the option to load less vikhrs would indeed be nice and realistic in my opinion :)

Exactly. Mountain flying is demanding.

You also can get a bit more performance if your target doesn't need the extra firepower. Have you tried flying the Su-25 with just six hardpoints used? A pair of drop tanks, a pair of Kh-25s and a pair of rocket launchers? It flies much better (which allows for easier defensive manoeuvres, more precision and less time over the target).

May be relevant with the up and coming weather effects of updrafts and downdrafts (?) in mountains.

HP G2 Reverb (Needs upgrading), Windows 10 VR settings: IPD is 64.5mm, High image quality, G2 reset to 60Hz refresh rate. set to OpenXR, but Open XR tool kit disabled.

DCS: Pixel Density 1.0, Forced IPD at 55 (perceived world size), DLSS setting is quality at 1.0. VR Driver system: I9-9900KS 5Ghz CPU. XI Hero motherboard and RTX 3090 graphics card, 64 gigs Ram, No OC... Everything needs upgrading in this system!.

Vaicom user and what a superb freebie it is! Virpil Mongoose T50M3 base & Mongoose CM2 Grip (not set for dead stick), Virpil TCS collective with counterbalance kit (woof woof). Virpil Apache Grip (OMG). MFG pedals with damper upgrade. Total controls Apache MPDs set to virtual Reality height. Simshaker Jet Pro vibration seat.. Uses data from DCS not sound... goodbye VRS.

Yeah it is possible. For instance you can mod it in by essentially creating a copy of the Vikhr but state it on only has x number of missiles. Also its already supported in the sense that limited resources may load less missiles on the rack than what you tell it to if the missiles aren't available, but I'm not sure it loads the payload evenly or not. Its certainly something that would be nice to have.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

Would making such a mod also effect the weight of the system? Or would it just be the ammunition amount?

Does not work, if I limit the number of VIKHRs in db_weapons_data.lua, the sim still draws 6 vikhrs on the shark or 8 vikhrs on the frog, although only limited number can be fired. We would probably need a new APU with 4 vikhrs only, or someone who knows how to do it

Here is a very interesting video from KA-50 in Chechnya operations, flying with only two vikhr missiles:

And we need this APU for Su-25T (4 Vikhrs per pylon):

I am still trying to figure out how to mod it in DCS world, but the only success I had was to insert Vikhr missiles into shturm pods.

Extremely interesting finds ...so the reduced weapons load *is* used as an operational payload!!

It was also interesting to discover that the Mi-28 often flies with only four 9M120 missiles per hardpoint (i.e. a total of eight rather than sixteen missiles)! This is particularly apparent in the gallery at the end of this article (a 1/2 missile loadout is visible in the majority of pictures): http://lemur59.ru/node/9466

It would be nice to have for AI (even if the Mi-28 isn't flyable).

Yeah, I didn't even realise that the 9M120 wasn't in the files!

It'd be nice if they also enhanced the loadouts of some of the AI aircraft (although they did a few fixes last patch - so I probably shouldn't complain). The Mi-24 has operationally carried 10xFAB-100, the Mi-8 has carried 4xS-24 etc.

I tried creating it by making use of an unused version of the Vikhr. Sadly, it didn't work out so well. There were two ways I went about it; in one, the AI would only ever fire one shot. In the other, the missile took on the shape of the 8-round launch tube of the Mi-28.

For this same reason I'd love to carry 2 GBU-12's on station 4 and 8 instead of 3 on my A-10C, just like I can arm 2 mavericks per wing instead of 3. Would help a lot with weight reduction as you easily overload the A-10C

i would like that too

That's what I want to do on Warthog, e.g. only carry 2 Mavs on a TER.

What´s stopping you?

Load also means fuel, real militaries need to keep track of that.

Why carry 12 missiles when 4 are enough?

Load decreases range, when you need to go far, you go light.

So having more customization options would be neat.
