Is this how it happened? Anyways, this map seems pretty cool ; I should try it again someday. :megalol: Last time I tried, I was trash-talked in chat and then attacked by 2 maniacs that should remain unnamed. You better hope you spot the launch and can flare the thing off, because there's no out-manoeuvring that beast! doodenkoff Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I finally found that artillery base. Who puts an artillery base in the very bottom of a valley? I orbited round and round scanning the tops of those hills. Finally noticed some specks waaaaayyy down there. Whatever...... It's challenging to attack in an L-39 with rockets only. Mirknir Posted September 8, 2016 Author Posted September 8, 2016 (edited) Tips Some dogfight tips Disclaimers: those tips are meant to share some of my processes. They may be wrong or not optimal ; I am not a professional. I am just a guy trying to kill F15s. First, a cool video by a pro: Watch this: http://y2u.be/OCFMX5z-ed4 Before the merge: I always load more flare as I find chaff useless. Now, if for some reason, I know or anticipate a merge to happen like I was told by the datalink, RWR, a friend or the awacs, I try to prepare for it. I always try to match my numbers to my intention. Do I intend to fight? Am I to high to go hide? Did I finish my ramen /vodka? Did I kiss my wife's picture? Am I too fast to turn efficiently? What's the delta between my speed and my corner speed? Do I need a slow or accelerate? What's my loadout? Do I have bombs or external tanks to drop? Once I start dogfighting, bye bye levelled flight and thus bye bye the window to jettison stuff. Did I cut my smokes? Yep, it happened :) Do I know where I am? Where are my backup? My closest base? Do I have an escape plan? Once I merge: Usually, 4 options: Turn into the enemy and proceed with O shaped trajectories Turn away from the enemy and proceed with 8 shaped trajectories Don't turn and flee Try anything I saw in Top Gun, lose all my energy and die. How do I choose? I check my situational awareness. Do I have time to fight? Friendly reinforcements are coming? Enemy ones are? Am I near an enemy base? with SAMs? Where is the sun? Can I use it to my advantage? The merge is also the best last moment to flee. Every seconds you stay in a dogfight, your awareness drops (the datalink can really help here) and your escape windows closes. I check my numbers and try to guess the enemy's Do I have enough weapons left? Do I have enough fuel left? What's my energy like? What kind of enemy plane? (the US RWR can really help here) Am I too fast to turn efficiently? Is he too fast? Am I too heavy to turn efficiently? Does he seem to heavy? Did I see external tanks on him? I am not good enough to anticipate my trajectories and to use the sun to my advantage but... I try at least to not have the sun behind the enemy. I will be blinded and my IR missiles will go to space. If I decide to fight: I find it easier to turn and keep a line of sight when turning in the enemy (O shaped trajectories). However, when using the helmet targeter, I prefer to be in 8 shaped trajectories as I feel like the missile has more distance to travel and the enemy trajectory is easier to track, less tangent-ing. Sometimes, I will just turn where the landscape is more favorable to use/hide behind. Sometimes, I will just turn one way to just avoid the sun problem. If I have the sun behind I when merging, I will most likely have it against me if I chose O shaped trajectories but less likely not with a 8. It's hard to predict but it can mean life or death with a low setting/rising sun. To keep visual / IR lock on the bandit, I also like to keep him higher than me so he is easily noticeable over the bright sky and I am less easy to spot over a dark ground. I may do the opposite if the sky is dark and the ground white (during a snowstorm for example) I may not care above sea level. Yea, I have problem spotting stuff. Even if, after a kill, some people - Dust - will tell me it's all thanks to the DL and that an 100 monkeys throwing an 100 cats on an HOTAS could achieve the same, I actually try not to rely on the Datalink too much after a merge. The information it gives is several seconds in the past and it matters in a dogfight. Even if the information is not good enough to track my main target, it's still good for situational awareness and have a quick glance at who is approaching your area and from where. Speaking of unreliable information, the RWR is designed to work in a certain flight envelop. When doing dogfight manoeuvres, I will most likely exit this envelop and have crappy RWR reading / warning. That's part of the awareness lost I was talking about. I have to open my eyes a bit more. From the top of my head, this is about the just of it. I am not sure how good are these tips but it's how I try to kill stuff and stay alive. I hope this can help people kill F15s  Edited September 8, 2016 by Mirknir Mirknir My old server: The Thread
acdelta57 Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Thanks for sharing. I will try these tips but I still and always will blame datalink !;) lol. Maybe someday I will bother to learn the Su27. Or maybe I just need stronger vodka, that could be a big problem too. Maybe I try upping the proof on Saturday's sorties. Based on the sole fact alone I can muster an average 3-1 K/d on 104th and about 1/1 in OC. Based on the sole fact alone I can muster an average 3-1 K/d on 104th and about 1/1 in OC. I didnt know the 104th had no awacs... must be the F15 kingdom :-) I won't lie, datalink is definitely an advantage and at least, I put su27/33 in both faction :) Something different on Open Conflict is also that the export is allowed. Since the beginning of the server, I've struggle with this. I want to allow replay with Tacview but not using it for a quick glance at enemy position during playtime. Even worst, some other export-based tools are, imo, almost designed for cheating. DCS export is kind of problematic in a sense that it's all or nothing. What I would like is having an export that export encrypted data and periodically send the cipher to clients, then change it and encrypt with a new cipher. This delay would be decided by the server. The cypher should be different for blue and red data and could be as simple as a temporary blue and red bulleyes. But I disgress... Right now, I can't allow the export without allowing some type of cheating. And I can't track who is using what. But Tacview is cool when you wanna learn and progress.... But Open Conflict has grown past everything I anticipated and now more advanced players are playing on it. I might try to cut the export for a while and see how it goes. What do you guys think?
