Hi all,

I originally posted this in the wrong category. I couldn't find an easy way to move this thread for there to here, so I just repost my question here.

What is the maximum range the cannon on the Su 27 can fire accurately from? I'm working through the Su-27 Training Aerial Gunnery. How close do people wait for the target to come within before they fire the cannon; just looking for a good ballpark distance?

You see a circle around the cross, i like it when the circle is half away, but you might want come closer for more maneuvering targets and (less) for unmaneuvering targets

There's no circle and cross; its a funnel you adjust to match the wingspan of your targer. I'm working out of the mission: Su-27 Training Aerial Gunnery.miz in the missions folder.

if you are using the funnel, set the correct wingspan and open fire when your are close enough to be able to hold the funnel on their wingtips. Personally, i never use the funnel. Lock with EOS and switch to guns, and you will get a CCIP pipper with a range tape around it.

Theres a circle and cross if you lock the target on the radar. There is a funnel if you have the radar off.

Okay, I am going to try those other modes. I found those training exercises you all mentioned here (I didn't know where to look before I posted this so your all replies are very helpful and didn't even know there were so many radar modes and other possibilities for weapons targeting) and will work on them later.

Just out of curiosity, I found the funnel gun mode incredibly difficult. The funnel jumps all over the screen and it looks like you have to get within 0.5 nm to even have a chance against that F-15C. Its pretty easy for the F-15C to evade you with a minimal turn or speed-up/slow-down. I read on wiki that the gun of the Su-27 isn't usually reliable except at close range in real life. More than that, its really hard for my hand to hold the joystick still enough for the aircraft to be steady long enough for the funnel to line up properly.

Did anyone else experience the gun funnel mode on this plane as hard? Okay if it is, I just want to see if that's the way the simulation is supposed to run (quite plausible based on wiki), something I missed (possibly an over-sensitive joystick), or maybe its just lack of experience and I need more practice.

I did get a lot of practice out of trailing a target though, which I think is useful for a beginner like me.

A few tips for guns in general:

Firstly, make sure to trim the plane before attempting a guns attack. You'll find it much easier to aim if the plane is trimmed slightly nose down. In my experience, aiming accurately while pushing the stick forwards is practically impossible. For similar reasons, check your control curves. If they're straight, try altering them so the stick is a little less sensitive near the centre- it will make aiming much easier.

With a radar lock the Flanker's 30mm cannon has the range and accuracy to be used effectively on non maneuvering targets like bombers 1000m away.

The funnel is a different matter: When you are using the funnel your fire control computer has no way of knowing what the target plane's range or velocity vector is. The computer instead bases its calculation on what your plane is doing (for example, If you are traveling north in a 4g right hand turn, the computer assumes that the target is also traveling north in a 4g right hand turn) and draws the funnel so that you can work out the range by yourself (by touching the target's wingtips to the funnel).

This means that the funnel's firing solution is only valid when the situation matches the assumptions the computer is making about the target's movements. Said assumptions are never more than an approximation of the reality. You need to get in close so the inevitable error isn't big enough to make your bullets miss.

I couldn't find these terms: EOS and CCIP. Could be that I'm only in the training missions but that in a real mission (which I haven't tried, yet) they would be more evident. I didn't see them in the controls or encyclopedia.

The mode you're looking for is described page 64 of the english manual. It's the Lead Computed Optical Sight (LCOS).

The EOS is the common western acronym for the Electro Optical Sight/Sensor/System. Its russian counterpart is called the OLS (оптико-локационной станции) (same as EOS or IRST).

The funnel mode is more like a backup/basic targeting system and is only employed from the rear hemisphere.

From what I remember the GSh-301 cannon has an effective range of 200 to 800 m against aerial targets and 1.200 to 1.800 m against ground targets.

use gun cross with unwinding range indicator. I usually fire between 3 and 6 o'clock

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.
