So I'm thinking of a project. One involving either laser cut plastic, or CNC plasma cut steel, a whole lot of toggle switches, and some desktop aviator boards.

My question is, any idea what the correct paint color match for the mig21 cockpit is?

Not really. But there were more then 10.000 MiG-21's made over a span of three or four decades. I don't think they all had the exact same color on the inside. So my advice is: look at pictures of the real thing and maybe visit a museum with one in the exhibit.

I meant the greenish blue used specifically in this module. I mean I'd print a close up and try to match it but that's not liable to work too well given printing isn't terribly accurate for color recreation.

I would go to a museum but there are none around here. The only one I know of in the country doesn't have a mig of any kind. And it's about 3500km away.

You could try ripping open the texture files and use the eyedropper tool of your favourite software to get its numbers. Make sure to use averaging if possible to reduce the likelihood of sampling an artifact.

EDIT: I took a look myself. The numbers are #297989 or RGB:41,121,137

I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.

That's actually quite on the blue side compared to what I would have said looking at the in game cockpit.

I came across a museum in Texas with a webpage entry about soviet cold war cockpit colors that was interesting. They do restorations and suggested benjamin moore mermaid green is actually a pretty good match in many cases. But there's of course quite a mixture of different colors, sometimes even within the same plane with one panel being a different color than another.

But I'll add that blue from the game files to my comparisons.

Screenshots and digital pictures in general are not reliable colorwise. This is because colours can show up very different in varying lighting conditions, and maybe the picture has been corrected with photoshop and the colorprofile of your monitor is a bit off. I am an avid aviation modeller of historic airplanes and some colors are impossible to get exactly right. I always look at lots of different pictures and try making some kind of average color between those different photographs.

Here is it...

This was a test shot for when i was making the 1:48 AZ fairey firefly. You see five pictures of exactly the same subject. Nothing was changed to the paint, only the ligthing was different each time. You see five different shades of... grey.

The Colourcode for the cockpit textures at the base layer is: #3d90a2

I used photoblending from many colour temperatures to arrive at this particular color.

It looks something like this: wZPDipS.jpg

I'm almost done, this will be useful. I'll see if I can get the paint shop to reproduce something that looks like what I want based on that color code.

I have the plate drawn out as a vector, the base built and painted, and all the electronics waiting. All I need is the CNC plasma guy to cut the plate vector and figure out how I'm going to actually paint it since I don't have a spray gun and you can't get custom color spray cans to my knowledge. Maybe I will have one as well by the time the project's done. Rolling it might look passable.

I found a specific paint which is sold for models - maybe this can help you getting the appropriate color for painting your plate.

Here is another link to some color chips

You could also do some further research for "USSR Interior Blue Green" - maybe it can be ordered in sprayable cans.

That's also a good idea, I ordered a bottle of that stuff. Paint places can't go by a cmyk color it seems so as far as replicating the game color, the best i could figure would be to print out a whole bunch of shades close to it on a laser printer and pick the one that replicates the look the best, since printing isn't accurate, then get them to use that printed sample to match.

Or I can just use this model paint and do the same thing and get the greenish color instead of the bluish color in the game. Or maybe both just to see which I like better.

The good news is custom spray cans are a common thing at some autobody places here after all, so it's actually not a problem to get a can of automotive grade custom paint for 20 dollars. You can even get catalyzed one use clear-coat spray cans with an activator apparently.

After a lot of waiting for stuff the project is nearing completion, and is pictured below in where its going to sit next to my throttle.

Still waiting on paint to arrive to get a custom spray bomb made in soviet cockpit emerald green.

The base I built in 1/2 MDF and painted in glossy black krylon fusion plastic paint.

And the first cut of the plate was crooked and messed up so its being remade but this is what the final box will mostly look like if you can envision the green mig21 cockpit color on the steel and 15 full size toggle switches in the holes.

I'm going to print black with white text brother ptouch labels to look in line with the labeling in the mig21.
