WelshZeCorgi Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 (edited) Has any Sim ever "tackled" a Nuclear War campaign/scenario? With nuclear capable migs, it feels like it would make for an interesting experience to live out the absolutely unthinkable and see and participate in a simulated world that decended into/ended in a fiery nuclear holocaust from the perspective of an airman... A campaign that may force you to make hard moral decisions, like... you only have time to take out one of two nuclear capable bombers, one heading towards your base and one heading towards a highly populated city. Do you sacrifice the city to save your comrades, or sacrifice your comrades to save a city of innocent people? I got this sort of question lodged in my mind after I saw an episode on "narrative mechanics" from the guys at Extra Credits... give it a watch, it's a very interesting video about the making of "missile command." King_Hrothgar Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 The mass slaughter of civilians is typically a taboo topic in entertainment. This applies not only to video games but also TV and movies. It's a subject I'd like to see touched on more often, but doing so in a respectful manner is difficult and financially risky.
CheckGear Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 What I want to see is more realism and less fantasy. It seems like every sim/wargame tries to depict the worst possible scenario in every case. Yet, in the real world, the wars we fight are rarely, if ever, the worst possible scenario. Still horrible enough. You don't need nukes for war to be absolutely unthinkable. I'd rather have a campaign/scenario that demonstrates the advantage of air power, while at the same time showing how complicated world affairs can be.
Strelok Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Well, even when someone will want to do a "nuclear warfare campaign for DCS" there is one huge problem with that... DCS is unable to adequately simulate any realistic scenario of nuclear warfare. And basically there isn't any simulation that can do so. If you cross moral line and try to start making some kind of realistic simulation like that, you quickly find out that nuclear warfare is much complicated than you can imagine. And in my opinion there is another problem with that kind of missions in DCS and that is fact that DCS is simulation and in making some moral or emotional based missions it will probably fail. Cinematic based arcades like Call of Duty, Battlefield etc... are better in that way of bringing emotions into gameplay than DCS is. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] -My DCS screenshots-
tarracta Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Has any Sim ever "tackled" a Nuclear War campaign/scenario? I remember Novalogic's F-22 Lightning III where it was possible to drop nukes on a parachute from the F-22. But it's good that DCS doesn't offer nukes because every military sim trivialises the war already enough. And the consequences of a nuke drop just can't be simulated without too much belittlement. There's just no possibilty to simulate the nuclear fallout which rains down 3 days after over a city or whatever.
VincentLaw Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 I would be interested in a campaign involving the employment of tactical nukes against the combat forces of a numerically superior enemy to even the odds. Having nukes doesn't have to mean dropping a Tsar Bomba on Tbilisi. The MAD Armageddon scenario would be kind of boring from a gameplay standpoint anyway. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Implementation of tactical nukes and SRBMs into DCS can have some potential in my eyes.RN-28 bombs have potential to eliminate any airfield in game and i think this have some sense especially in MP (I see it as good concept for MP missions). But tactical nukes in DCS need to be reworked and I hope that is planned feature because I saw some screens of SS-21 Scarab on OTR-21 Tochka for DCS 2 at WIP state.
