Does anybody have any LUA magic that will let me change the default zoom when activating Map View (CTRL-F10) within the game?

My problem is that I want to have everything mapped to my HOTAS. However, when I view the Map, it is zoomed in so close that it is effectively useless. As the zoom in/out keys don't work with the map, I have to grab my mouse and use the scroll wheel to zoom out, etc. etc.

What I'd like to be able to do is set the default zoom (perhaps by changing a LUA value somewhere???) so that when I view the map, I can actually see a reasonable area around me without having to zoom.

Can anyone help me with this?

I think that if you view the mission in question in the mission editor and adjust the map view there to your liking and then save it as such it will be the zoom level and position you see when you fly the mission and hit F10.

Unfortunately that didn't work Blooze but thanks for the suggestion.

If you change the map position/zoom and then toggle the view with just F10 (NOT CTRL-F10 over your plane) it will go back to the last position/zoom you were viewing. However, you must still set that initial position/zoom with the mouse. While CTRL-F10 nicely centers the map over your current position (what I want) it always resets the zoom value to a very tight/small view.

Anyone else have another suggestion?

I wonder if this can be done using player saved snapviews. Do a search and check out the posts discussing snap_views :)

I use custom snap views all the time (as I don't have TrackIR) and believe they are only for in-cockpit views (they are listed as such in the hotkey menu). At any rate, I was unable to get them to work for this purpose.

Still open to anyone who might have a clever fix for me, thanks!

you could start here -> "... DCS World\MissionEditor\data\NewMap\classifier.lua"

  • Start changing settings and then
  • modify, restart and check
  • Until you go insane.

Or wait and see what DCS 1.5 brings and then try the above.

Why not use voice commands. I use Voice Attack to do various tasks as don't have luxury of loads of spare joystick buttons.

Would be very easy to do with voice control.

I do actually. Voice Attack is fantastic and I've made some fairly involved profiles. However, I prefer the tactile nature of the HOTAS for many things.

I generally use Voice Attack for comms (Wingmen/ATC/JTAC/etc.) or lengthy macros a copilot/crew members might conceivably help me with (e.g. "Go weapons hot", "Panel lights to medium") and (very) occasionally a few obscure features that don't warrant a dedicated button.

But, things like "Scroll map left" or "Zoom out 5" feel slow, cumbersome and unnatural. A quick button press to glance at the map and get a grid reference to pass on over Teamspeak is what I'm hoping for.

That said, I appreciate the suggestion and Voice Attack is the best alternative I'm using at the moment. Tnx.

Aha! Now that's what I'm talking about. Yes, it will take a lot of mucking around but this is the kind of thing that (at this point anyway) I think will have the best shot of getting me what I'm looking for.

Yes, I realize that 1.5/2.0 may improve/solve some of these UI inflexibilities. But ED are likely concentrating on frying the big fish at the moment preparing for launch. As a result, I'm guessing these little bits of polish (while very important!) will likely have to simmer on the back-burner a while longer.

So, I'll start poking around and see what I can come up with. If anybody has more detailed information about this or any other LUA files that might save me some time - I'm all ears. For example which files are loaded once, which ones are per mission, specific variable functions, etc.

Thanks Vicx!

P.S. The Cyrillic comments are a nice touch! No point making it too easy! ;-)
