Hoggorm Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Hi, I admit that my laptop is not the best there is, however it do meet the minimum requirements of DCS 1.5: Minimum system requirements: OS 64-bit Windows 7/8/10; DirectX11; CPU: Core i3; RAM: 8 GB; Video: 2 GB RAM card, DirectX11 - compatible My laptop has: 64-bit Windows 7, DirectX11, Intel Core i5-3210M, 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 660M 2GB GDDR5 On DCS 1.2.x I was able to run the sim smooth with mid to low settings. On DCS 1.5 however every setting is at minimum. Still the sim lags for a fraction of a second every few seconds. When I'm close to ground, and there is explosions etc close to the aircraft the lag is intense... To sum up: My laptop meets the minimum requirements, but the sim is unable to run acceptable with those specs...
The_Nephilim Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Hi Are you absolutely sure the Laptop is using the NVidia Graphics card and not the built in one?? I would say that could be the issue.. Corvus Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 I've run 1.5OB on i3 520 with 4GB of RAM and GTX460 1 GB. On low settings with preload set to 50000 I was getting around 120-130 FPS so I think something is not quite right with your setup. My YT channel https://www.youtube.com/user/corvuscorp81
104th_Maverick Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Agreed, your laptop specs are better than my desktop specs and I get very good performance at low / med settings. Hoggorm Posted October 5, 2015 Author Posted October 5, 2015 I see! I'm quite sure the computer runs the NVIDIA graphics card. On my laptop there is a "speedometer" icon that lights up orange. This should indicate that the NVIDIA card is running. If the light is not lit, the Intel graphics card is running the show. Also - in the NVIDIA control panel I've set the NVIDIA card to be on always by default. Other games run relatively smoot. Games that I do not think would run if not the NVIDIA card was working. The problem is that DCS 1.5 OB runs smooth between these lags and stutters. So I have smooth running for a few seconds, then a stutter/lag, then smooth again, then stutter/lag and so on. I have tried to show what my FPS is, but the keys for that option do not work as I describe in this post: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=149062
Vitesse2l Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Hello Hoggorm Have you checked to see what else your laptop may be doing? I use msconfig to prevent lots of unnecessary stuff from running. Also make sure it's not doing anything like windows update or creating restore points. You probably know all that stuff already!
Oldguy Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) Use Hwinfo to see where the choke-point is after you run the program. It's a free utility that records many variables of system performance over time. Edited October 5, 2015 by Oldguy add missing info.
Hoggorm Posted October 5, 2015 Author Posted October 5, 2015 Something is definitely wrong... After much hard work I've uninstalled the Nvidia and Intel Drivers. Still the orange "speedometer" light that should indicate that NVIDIA Discrete GPU (dGPU) is activated lights. Hence I cannot be sure if it was actually on earlier... It might be that after uninstalling the driver, there was no way to tell if the Nvida card was running and therefore it stays on, but it is still strange... Maybe a reinstall of the driver will help. Else I'll try the Hwinfo software. Never tried that though... I've not used Msconfig before, but I feel I have a fairly good idea of what is running by using software like CCleaner.
AtaliaA1 Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) Typically in this scenario it would be the USB device causing issues. What are you using USB wise? Is there an update for the Motherboard from the Manufacturer of your Laptop? Remember that when the Sim. starts it is in borderless as apposed to full screen make sure you are in full screen. Gary Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 If your laptop is HP then its likely your drivers are the issue. There is a recognised issue where the Intel gfx driver borts the dedicated card one. Jump on the HP support site and you will find answers. I5 - 1TB SSHD, 256 SSD - Nvidia 1070 - 16gb ram - CV1

Hoggorm Posted October 6, 2015 Author Posted October 6, 2015 I have now uninstalled and reinstalled both Intel and Nvidia drivers and made sure I am actually running DCS in fullscreen when flying. I have to admit there are some improvements, although there still are lags and stutters from time to time. Usually they are not more than annoying. However every few minutes the sim freezes for about a sec. And that is a long time if there is some heavy maneuvering at the time. I have finally been able to show FPS, and it usually is around 60. When the stutter appears from time to time it drops to around 10… This can happen when I just fly straight and level. I've tried to disconnect the TrackIR USB while in flight. I can't really say if helps yet… Anyway I feel I must have TrackIR running to enjoy the sims poetical, so it really do not matter that much… Unless there is a fix of course!
Hoggorm Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 Do you think it will help to replace my HDD with a SSD disk?
Hardcard Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 (edited) Do you think it will help to replace my HDD with a SSD disk? Before doing that, you might want to monitor vram usage. That freezing you described could be explained by DCS 1.5 needing more vram than your gpu can deliver and then switching to RAM (which is slower). To monitor vram usage you can try MSI Afterburner+RivaTuner Statistics Server. If the freezing starts happening when vram usage reaches the gpu limit, then you've probably found the issue. Another explanation could be overheating...check gpu temps, if they are too high when you are in the cockpit, that could explain the freezing too. Another thing to check is the status of your disk. Is DCS 1.5 installed in the same disk as the operating system? How much free space does the disk have? Do you have a paging file enabled in that disk? Freezing can also occur when your disk runs low on space, keep that in mind. Another thing to check are power saving features for the hard drive and gpu, make sure all power saving features are disabled, everything should be running in performance mode. Finally, run "resource monitor" (Windows 7) to find out whether or not you have other programs taking too much resources in the background...
