Lascaille Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Am thinking to make a public dedi once 1.5 comes out of beta and we have a decent idea of memory and CPU requirements. There's a shortage of decent servers in Asia and most USA servers yield a ping of 175+. I'd want to host mostly freeflight maps - good ones with target rich environments, something in a similar vein to OpenConflict Sochi - but with proper missions starting GMT+8 8pm weekdays a few days a week, and Saturdays or Sundays. Of course the costs for a proper dedicated server (a Xeon 8/16gb rack server in a datacenter, not a box under some guy's stairs) are not insignificant and it would be nice to share costs using kickstarter or gofundme etc. Nothing is on the table yet but it would be nice to know if there was any interest. Also, to have the official opinion as to whether one could publicise such a kickstarter/gofundme here.
Slazi Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Time sounds great, but you don't need a xeon based server to host dcs. A pc in a bedroom on a decent connection is fine unless you're expecting tons of players. I'd suggest doing exactly that at first and then seeing how much interest it generates before getting cutting edge gear setup. I can host decent games on my old pc without even disabling gfx output in 1.5. Count me as interested!
Lascaille Posted October 15, 2015 Author Posted October 15, 2015 I get your point but 'a PC on a bedroom with a decent connection' isn't something I have - my residential connection is DSL, 512k/15m. That is plenty of downstream for any reasonable usage but only enough upstream for 4 or 5 clients. Each client needs about 0.1-0.15Mbps of bandwidth to be available at the server, with some margin on top. Can you host or produce a 5-10Mbps connection somewhere? I would rather pay outright for hardware than $200 monthly. A cheapo server is cheap, you are right, it doesn't need a Xeon but if you want dedicated servers these days they don't seem to offer much less than a Xeon, I guess virtual machines have taken over the low end.
Slazi Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 I have access to a fast connection and a resonable pc, unfortunately my wife wouldn't be too pleased with leaving a pc on all day in the house. Ideally, some kind soul will have a server we can use for free! Asia sucks for pc gaming.
Oceandar Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Is this idea still alive ? Can't find it on dcs multiplayer list. Playing with my fellow Asian would be great. Please make it sim mode only if possible. Cheers Gam Zeh Ya'avor - King Salomon Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. - Lao Tze
BaD CrC Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 The only regular MP server I can see in Asia usually is in Korea. But that's still pretty far from Singapore, and I don't think they are willing to speak anything else but Korean. https://www.blacksharkden.com http://discord.gg/blacksharkden
Oceandar Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I think its fine as long as they accept foreign flyers. What's name of the server ? Sometimes I join Chinese Haibiantu ? server and I think they're ok with it. Its an air quake, take off, shoot, dodge, get kill or be killed, its fun tho lol... It used to sit at the bottom of my MP list when I was flying in Europe since the ping was pretty huge. https://www.blacksharkden.com http://discord.gg/blacksharkden

No problem, I'll look for it myself when I'm in DCS. Thanks Gam Zeh Ya'avor - King Salomon Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. - Lao Tze
