Hi guys,

I’m seeking an advice from you on which hotas to get. I had x45 but it broke just recently and I’m not sure If I should get another x45 or upgrade to x52.

Also, I’d like to upgrade my graphic card. I have got Radeon 9600xt 128mb, and I’m not sure which card would be a good candidate for upgrade. If you have any recomendation please post them

Thanks

X52 has twist-rudder. Given the choice of my X45's rocker and the X52's twist- I would pick CH pro pedals. :P

X52 apparently allows you to switch profiles on the fly. If the X45 does that- it ain't workin for me.

X52 doesn't have that 500lb centering spring / friction plate. sque-e-ek!!r-u-b!!! gr-i-i-n-nd!!

The main reason to continue with another X-45 is you simply plug it in and roll. No new profiles, no installation.

Well, the 9600XT is not that powerful by todays standards. a new one will definitelly help your games overal as well as lockon.

But as Kenan said, lockon is way more CPU bound.

As for the X52, yes it's great (better if you like blue leds) :p

You're not entirely right Kenan - LOMAC is more gfx card dependent than F4. When i upgraded from 9500pro (almost the same as 9600xt) to 9800pro, i've noticed much better performance, anywhere from 5-15 fps, which is quite a gain in this sim.

. . . . . more or less.

The 9500 Pro was part of the 9500/9700 family, didn't share all that much with the 9600.

The 9600XT was part of the 9600/9800 family - IIRC the 9500 had more pipelines, but the 9600XT ran at fairly uber speeds . . . .

At that kind of graphics card level, you will get significant boosts by upgrading (as long as you have a decent processor). If, however, you're at the X800/7800 level or higher, your performance will be hindered by your CPU . . . . . Athlon 64's at 3500+ and above are useful by that level ;)

What kind of CPU have you got at the moment?

I got p4 2.4gh

1gb memory

80gb HD

Right - with a P4 2.4GHz CPU, you can buy a faster graphics card and things will look better.

However, in order to really see the benefit of the newer cards, you need to be about a gigahertz faster . . . . .

Got a budget of any kind for this? ;)

The x-52 never really worked for me. After a few wekks the lights on the stick started flashing and the stick was not responding anymore. I tried everything, on every computer and it's still not working.... How frustrating... I have to play with the keyboard although i bought the x-52 !!!

just my opinion, i have a ATI 1800 and my dad a nvidia 7900. They are almost identical from what i compare, and our computers are pretty much identical. The ati runs lockon better. I would highly recomend those. My dad got the nvidia for 230$ while to 1800 was more expensive if bought new, but i was a refurbished card. I recomend either of these cards. But if you need it more, i would go for the new cpu or ram, i upgraded from 1 to 2 gegs of really fast ram. I think that is what made lockon run like it does now for me!

What CPU's do you both have? :D

Had 'em both! X52 looks too spacey, but is very smooth and worth any additional dime!

Price/Utility Ratio is the best! If it were not that ugly. Although the brushed aluminium is quite fancy. But the blue LED make it look like a UFO's Stick :joystick:

you know you can turn the leds off if its that big of a deal right?

I think the X52 is a MUCH better buy, because it's simply a lot smoother.

right clik on saitek profiler (windows bar)and the you will be able to adjust the lights.

yeah the joystik is good , I bought it because my x-45 died. I only have one complain , the repair service is very bad , I sended back my x-52 because I was getting electric shooks , 4 weeks later , they send it back with the same problems and without the instalation cd and the ps2 cable :furious:

I also got the X-52 after a looong time with my X-45.

Unfortunately, it met it's end in a BF2 match while in practice round. The Joystick's base (the one connected to the spring that goes up and down) broke and it wouldn't stay centered. So I thought I'd get X-52. It's nice, less hard movement on the joystick but I preferred the X-45's rudder under the throttle, turning the joystick itself for rudder control in X-52 is a bit weird for me.

Btw, it is just me, or every new Saitek HOTAS must be even more like a Christmas tree? :P

X-36F and X-35T were nice in their black colour, X-45 got the blue, gray and orange happiness and X-52 could easily be a desktop lampshade of sorts. Yeah, turned it's lights off because after the first few hours, they were a little disturbing while flying for me. :D

Obviously flashing leds aren't a problem. What is a problem is that when it flashes (even if the leds are turned off) the stick does not respond anymore.

I'm having the same problem as you do and it appeared just recently. Perhaps this is a common problem with X45 series. Usually I just reconnect the throttle back to the stick and it's gone for a while.

I have a feeling it's gonna die soon, after just 3 years :(
