Why are there so many different versions of the 29 in DCS? As far as I can tell, the A for instance is just the S without the ability to use the R-77 and a few other unguided rockets. Same for the G. Back in 1.2 at least there was the option to change the MFD function in the S that wasn't possible in the other versions. So, why are they there? Is there some other difference that I am not aware of?

Is the A just the downgraded export version? Are the upgrades, such as increased fuel capacity and payload modeled in the S vs the A? So the G is the German version that has been made NATO capable, does this mean any change in game functionality? I have found references to a Mig 29T in the game but can't seem to find it elsewhere, or any info on it.

The A in-game is the 9.12A, the original MiG-29 from 1985 or so. The G is the former East German version, the G in-game is from after Germany reunited so it uses imperial measurements, German voice warning, and IIRC the real one had western IFF/navigation equipment. The 29S (9.13S model designation) has more slightly more fuel, an internal defensive jammer (in-game its weaker than the other FC3 jammers), and an upgraded radar capable of supporting 2 R-77s against 2 different targets.

Edit: Also, the top-down view on the HDD in the 29 was removed because the real one doesn't have it, apparently its a Flanker-only thing.

OK thanks for explaining everyone. Turns out it was just smaller differences that I had noticed in regular play.

Edit: Does anyone have any idea what the T version is that is mentioned in some documentation and ingame?

Never heard of it...are you sure you're not thinking of Kh-29T?

To be honest with the A and G, I'd not consider them different enough to actually consider as being different versions, I mean, the main thing is the avionics are not quite to the same standard and the engines are de-tuned on the G, but that was by choice by the Luftwaffe to gain more hours out of them.

The A and G seem more akin to block differences when talking about the F-16 for example, rather than the difference between an F-16A and a C.

There really is no such thing as a "MiG-29G" - its a designation that Luftwaffe assigned to it("G" for Germany) after they inherited a number of former East German airframes(warsaw pact 9.12 version) and modified them for NATO compliance. The corresponding designation for the -UB(two-seat trainer version) is "MiG-29GT".

The modifications were rather subtle including:

- de-tuning the engines for increased lifetime

- modification to the fuel-system(allowing wing drop-tanks)

- radio equipment

- instrument read-out in imperial units(knots, feet etc)

- cockpit labeling, instruments, warning lamps and Ekran in English

- voice warnings in German.

- voice warnings in German.

I remember long time ago that DCS (then Flaming Cliffs) had those, but they don't seem to be available these days. Any idea if they're still in the game?

They're still around, just heard the German VMU about 2 days ago in-game.

I have an idea that perhaps should be turned into a post.

So as we know the MiG-29s new 3d model and FM is just around the corner, making it into a well fleshed out plane for DCS. So I came to this idea and I felt that it could be brought to you guys.

What about the MiG-29A being used as a third free airplane for DCS:W ?

*Its a base level fighter with the S being the upgraded version. Its not the best fighter but still gets a good armament and is quite capable in the right hands.

*IRL it has been widely exported in huge numbers (including NATO countries) and is a well known and popularized aircraft around the world. Being free would emulate that popularity

*Its simple to learn but hard to master, perhaps making it easier for newer pilots to get acclimated to DCS and its learning curve while at the same time providing continuous challenge to master the airplane in combat.

*Its multi-role. It carries simple A-G ordinance and can provide even more enjoyment to a new pilot (if he doesn't like the more dedicated and heavier Su-25T).

I feel like it would bring more people to the game, giving them a free taste of fighter action without giving them a top of the line 4th generation aircraft. Still giving them incentive to buy better fighters and join the community.

What do you think?
