Oceandar Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Hi there, I play only DCS and have tight budget. My system is very old AMD X3 445, 6 GB RAM and AMD 7770 with 1 Gb Vram. Which one come first ? Intel i5 system or upgrade my VGA to GTX 970 ? I tend to upgrade to GTX 970 because its less hassle and seem much more simple. What do guys hardware guru think ? Brisse Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I'm sorry, but it's probably not worth swapping components in such an old system. It will just end up horribly unbalanced and the new component won't be utilized very well. You should consider an entirely new system.
Oceandar Posted December 14, 2015 Author Posted December 14, 2015 Yeah I realize that, but currently only have limited budget. Do you think I should change it to Intel i5 first ? Thanks Brisse Only the dead have seen the end of war - Plato Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. - Lao Tze
Boberro Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 I have i5 2500K still on stock, 16 GB of RAM and GT 560Ti 1GB. CPU is not used even in 50% in DCS. RAM usage is about 10 GB, only GPU is to be changed for something newer with 4 GB VRAM. I bought this setup (except RAM which I changed recently from 8 to 16 GB) 4 years ago. Still runs well :) Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
Oceandar Posted December 18, 2015 Author Posted December 18, 2015 (edited) In my ancient system DCS surprisingly runs quite well after 1.5 , that's actually made me back to DCS after a long break. Average FPS around 30 with high setting in texture and terrain on 1204 x 1084 res ? (don't remember exactly). With my budget I think I'd change my entire rig with Intel i5 system and pairing it with Zotac GTX 960 AMP. I hope that would be enough for 2 - 3 years ahead. Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.
Dan83 Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 (edited) Hey! I have a quite similar question and dont really know what would be the best way to go. My System: CPU: Intel Q9550 @3400 MHz (OC +20%) Board: Asus Maximus II Formula RAM: 4x 2GB G.e.I.L. PC2-6400 GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX770 @4GB VRAM PSU: be quiet! E7-CM 680W OS: Windows 10 - 64bit DCS played on 1920x1080 Single Monitor Setup, FPS about 15-20fps over Vegas/Nellis AFB at mostly medium settings. Do u think it would be better to upgrade the GPU, since my CPU seems only to be used at about 60% (watching the most used Core). Or is it maybe the CPU and the slow RAM/Motherboard being the bottleneck, not enabling the GTX770 to use the full potential? I wonder if an upgrade to something like a i5-6600K + 16GB RAM is increasing performance noticeable, although it seems to be a good base for the future. Best would be to upgrade both, but it's not really a minor investment. So i'm stuck between buying a GTX970/980 or a CPU upgrade... :dunno: Thanks for your help in advance Edited January 16, 2016 by Dan83 Added detailed System Information
dburne Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 I personally think you would be better with a cpu upgrade , something you can clock to around 4.2-4.5 ghz. Don B EVGA Z390 Dark MB | i9 9900k CPU @ 5.1 GHz | Gigabyte 4090 OC | 64 GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz CL16 | Corsair H150i Pro Cooler |Virpil CM3 Stick w/ Alpha Prime Grip 200mm ext| Virpil CM3 Throttle | VPC Rotor TCS Base w/ Alpha-L Grip| Point Control V2|Varjo Aero|
Sweep Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 -snip- I'd grab more RAM at a minimum. Lord of Salt
Dan83 Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 I personally think you would be better with a cpu upgrade , something you can clock to around 4.2-4.5 ghz. If the GTX770 is at least capable to play DCS 2.0 fluid (min 30fps) on something between medium and high settings that is the route to go. Can't judge that with my system at the moment. Thanks for the reply!
Oceandar Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 I concur with above suggestions. Go with new CPU. I finally upgrade my entire hardware. i5 4690k and MSI GTX 960 4G and its smooth as silk and my fps never below 30 (res 1920 x 1080, high setting) certainly well worth the money. Your 770 slightly better from my gtx 960 I believe. So good luck Only the dead have seen the end of war - Plato Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. - Lao Tze
