Hi

 

Just got the Saitek Pro Flight Pedals and the Warthog Hotas but having some issues.

 

I filmed the instant action take off from DCS 2.0. Video should be embedded, but if not direct link is at the bottom of the page.

 

First issue is keeping it straight on take off. You can see me make a slight correction and it all seems ok. but then it goes pear shaped at around 53 seconds and i start to veer. I'm not sure if I am under or overcompensating with the rudder pedals

 

Second issue is the trimming. You can see when I take off there is a big dip of the right wing at 1:07. Whats causing that? And also it takes a hell of lot of trimming to level out. Is that normal using the HOTAS trim buttons?

 

And thirdly what the hell is my AI Wingman doing at 2:20??? :)

 

So any advice on hardware settings or flight controls appreciated. Thanks for your patience. I assumed once i had these pedals and HOTAS it would be so easy, but it's not so forgive my ignorance. :huh:

You need to disengage nose wheel steering above 50-70 knots otherwise the rudder will become very sensitive - might want to add curves to it if you find it still hard to handle.

 

Also your takeoff speed is a bit on the slow side - the effect of asymmetric load can be dramatic at slow speeds.

Not sure what caused the wing dip. A10s require frequent trimming but I wouldnt have said a "lot" in terms of major deflections. A few clicks of the trim should compensate for most trims use cases. Make sure to zero i.e. Takeoff trim prior to takeoff so you are startung center.

 

I came from flying F16s and spend a lot of timing finding out what was "wrong" with my A10 control config. In short it requires much more fine adjustments and compensating for varying configurations than fly by wire birds do.

 

Once I got a feel for it I really enjoy the "raw" feel of the A10.

Firstly, you might want to add some curvature to your rudder. Go into Axis Tuning and set it to about 20 or 25; the usual recommendation from most forum members here. You were overcompensating a little even when you just started your roll.

 

Secondly, and don't take this too harshly as I mean it constructively, you pitched up too much on takeoff. Pull the nose up more gently to about 10 degrees, and hold it there. As they say, "let the plane fly itself up off the runway" and don't yank it up.

 

I can't tell from the video but the wing dip might actually be explained by exceeding the critical angle of attack (again, from pitching up too aggressively). One of your wings tends to stall before the other, causing a sudden and violent roll, as you experienced. Happens to me whenever I panic on a SAM launch, hee hee! :D

On a funnier note. The wingman crossing my nose by millimeters at 2.20. I've never seen that before.

That must be completely wrong, as I have the same recommendations, I can vouchsafe 100% I have never watch my little pony on anything, let alone online, nor searched for anything like it.

heheh. Well, I certainly wasn't watching any of those. I think it gave those suggestions simply because the OP called his video "My Video" so YouTube has little context to go by.

Use the depressible pipper and put it on -10° degree pitch line just before takeoff (that's -178 mils on the HUD). Pull on the stick when you reach 110 knots, and let the pipper reach the horizon pitch line on the HUD: keep it there until the plane flies off the runway by itself.

As far as I see, you just need to get use to the pedals and stick. It just takes some time and practice. If your flying in sim mode and not game mode, the aircraft acts like a real A10 and that's something you just don,t jump in to and drive like a car. Have patience and practice a lot. Here's a summary of a typical takeoff.

 

With just a couple of Mavericks loaded, spool engines up to 90% with breaks on, release brakes and start rolling with engines now at 100%, flaps to first position. Use nose wheel to maintain straight course down runway. Disengage nose wheel at 50kts max. You will now be using rudder to maintain direction. Slowly pull back on stick at 145kts and set your climb angle to 5 degrees when you lift off. Set flaps to 0 degrees at 170kts.

 

You need to understand that at those low speeds and low altitude the flight controls can be rather sensitive and don't respond as when you are speed and altitude. Gain speed and altitude and then play.

 

Just keep practicing. So what if you crash a lot at first. A10's don't cost you anything so just have fun.:thumbup:

Aren't flight controls usually very sluggish at low speeds? I've found in small GA aircraft I have to move the control surfaces a greater deal for inputs.

 

The A10 is heavy and slow which would mean especially in a high-drag takeoff situation the plane will be at a state of maximal drag and minimal lift making control inputs much more extensive.

 

Stick and rudder flying over fly-by-wire... it never looks quite as good ;)
