My local PC store just dropped a sales on INTEL cpu's. Specifically the the i5-6600K and the i7-6700K.

I've had the i5-6600K on my list as I feel it is what I need to build a specific rig for my DCS needs. But now with the current sale there is a $100 difference between the two. I don't know enough about the granular differences so I'm looking for some help.

Over the last few months I've been researching PC parts and building my knowledge. So my gut reaction is stay with the i5, and a better option would invest the extra $100 in the GPU.

Thoughts?

Been asked and answered many man times on this very forum.

Most, including me have said go with the i5, the extra cost isnt really justified. DCS 2.0 is more GPU reliant than CPU reliant, so the i5 will be fine when paired with a decent video card.

I went for an i5 4690k and left it standard clocked, I'm very happy with my performance.

And lo, Reverend Vegas did say "Take forth unto the infidel the mighty GAU 8 and expend its holy 30MM so that freedom will be brung upon them who knoweth not the joys of BBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTT"

Your gut is probably right.

The two main differences:

I7 has virtual cores, ie a 4 core processer can run as 8 virtual cores with hypterthreading. No benefit for gaming, would see more of a benefit for things like heavy video processing.

The I7 has slightly larger L2 cache, again would probably not see a real world difference.

I run an I7 4820K and in fact have hyperthreading disabled, as my cpu cores run a little cooler and helps stability in my overclocking of the cpu.

But yes, do get the K processor whichever you go with, as it will have unlocked multiplier and very easy to overclock.

I agree with whats been said. I run a i7 4790K but use my system for much more than DCS so it was worth it. If your DCS only, the i5 is the way to go.

It's better if you invest 100€ towards better GPU or CPU cooling. Overclocking sure helps out a lot!

Yup, just wanted to make sure all I was figuring this out. All those PC component numbers can quickly start to swirl in the head if you're new to this.

Thanks for the great break-out and info dburne & Gladman!

....and great amount of work and effort for that tiborrr (unfortunately there is not an emoji that conveys the amount of WIN for your work on the data collection).

I've been back and forth on the fan vs. water cooled CPU options. I think if I stay with the i5 a fan is adequate. But with an i7 I would look more into water cooling the CPU.

The other side of the coin is after I complete the gaming rig I promised my wife I would build her a video production/editing rig. So I was already planning i7 with a lower/mid powered GPU.

Fwiw, I love my Corsair H100i closed loop cooler. Have been running it in this build for a little over two years now and it does an excellent job keeping my cpu cores nice and cool at my 4.50 ghz overclock.

Installation was really easy as well.

Obviously would need a case that accommodated mounting the radiator though.

My selected case is compatible for the H100i, and still an option for a cooling component.

What loads/processes on the CPU cause the overclocking? Does running DCS, flight sim peripherals, trackir, teamspeak, and the coffee maker draw more power requirements from the CPU?

It seems like dburne's set up is very similar to what I want to build so I am guessing that running all of the above is within limits without sacrificing performance.

I have had to make this decision in the past couple of days and went with the i7 purely because I also sometimes fly Prepar3d v2 which I have read elsewhere runs better with a larger cache. As someone else said if it's just DCS World then i5 is the way to go I think.
