Hi

Any idea why using TAD as SOI and pressing TMS Up Long that I can't create a SPI in a mission?? I notice on OSB 6 it says SPI Off. I have literally started the mission and haven't done anything apart from Autopilot and then went to TAD as SOI, so it's nothing I have changed in mission.

Thanks

As Doughboy saud, hook the symbol then spi.

The "SPI OFF" indication in OSB6 is the status of your SPI broadcast, so all flights/ aircraft that have your same NET group ID will be able to see your spi as a "two level" wedding cake and a blue line fron your aircraft to your spi.

You can start the broadcast by pressing DMS left long.

Hi

I am actually not hooking a symbol. I just want to create a SPI so I can practice moving my TGP around the general area and look for things as I am trying to improve my TGP spotting skills which trying to find things called out by JTAC that have moved or are xx clicks up a road suck. So it's just any random area on the map I am selecting and trying to make SPI which I will then practice trying to find things from that point. Hope that makes sense.

So just any point on the TAD with no pre existing symbol I want to make SPI.

Thanks

You can't. You have to to have some symbol you can hook to.

Fortunately you can create a mark point at the current cursor position to work around that limitation.

Move the cursor to the point you want to set your SPI to and then press TMS right short to create a mark point. You can then hook that point with TMS up short and make it SPI.

My guess is that since the TAD is designed for hooking symbols they don't want you to accidentally hook the ground close to the symbol you actually wanted to hook - thus you cannot reference the ground directly.

Don't want to hijack this topic, just tought to ask a bit more here: I read through all the hook feature in the manual, but I really couldn't filter out from all the information, what is the real benefit or purpose or reason of hooking something, if we have the SPI feature?? Why is it NOT reduntant? And what is the difference if we hook something to the aircraft, or we hook the aircraft to something?

Thanks

One reason on the top of my head: you can hook something that is not your SPI, and both show separately on the HUD. Also, you can also get bearing information of the hooked symbol to the bullseye. There are many other reasons for hooking to be a thing, other more expert pilots here will fill them in hopefully.

In addition to what Gliptal said, you can send tasking, check fuel state of the hooked aircraft (works sometimes), check their ground speed and more stuff.

One feature thats mentioned in the manual but it doesn't work is that you should be able to see the hooked aircraft's callsign and weapon load, it works for your own aircraft though (again, sometimes).
