I setup a Create Fast Mission in 2.0. I'm new to the F15C so I wanted to get familiar with the radar controls etc. I set it up so it was my single F15C against 4 SU 17s. We approached head on at similar altitude. I used to TWS to lock all 4 targets once I was within launch range of the AIM120 I launched 4 at the locked targets. Using TacView afterwards I find that all 4 were misses. The SU17s had to scatter but they evaded the AIM120s.

Since I'm on the learning curve I wonder if using TWS was the right approach?

What was your launch range? The AIM-120 doesn't live up to its DLZ usually.

Try shooting within 10nmi, you'll get hits.

Yes 100%. As Sweeps mentioned the AMRAAM isn't very deadly at all in most circumstances if launched from outside 10nm.

At first this might sound like suicide... but even against 4 bandits in a group, you really want to be launching at them inside 10nm.

Set yourself up to be as fast as possible to not only give your missiles the best chance of finding their targets, but you will also be able to extend away faster and stay alive if you keep your speed up!

Don't get disheartened if you get shot down or miss a lot when you're starting out, it takes some time to get your head around when and how to shoot at people.

Keep practicing my friend... it will come to you!

Check out the last clip in the video below, I engage and shoot down 3 bandits all in a close group from close range, all missiles find their new homes :D

OH! I was entering in the forum to post something similar, I ask here to not open a new thread. Last time I got a BVR fight was before 1.2.16 v. and I don´t remenber to face an AI so deadly like now. (Sure I´m out of practice)

Setup: F15 with aim-7/9 Vs AI Su-27 R-27ER/ET (1vs1)

In 10 round I ended eating his ET 10 times, I ate it from head to head, side by side, from below and of course in to my butt. Also seems very flare resistant.

And the AI as become very efficient avoiding the Aim-7.

Any advice? Should I ban Aim-7 from my weaponry and stick to 120?

Thanks for the advice. I launched as soon as I got the indicator so I was not within 10nm. I did have my speed up. I'll give it another try and launch closer in.

Maverick great vid!!

In a 1vs1 I prefer to have all options at hand. My loadout looks like this:

2 AIM-120C (longest range, shoot while high and fast, put him defensive)

2 AIM-120B (perfect for mid range and snap shots within 7NM)

2 AIM-7M (very good in tail aspect and close ranges)

2 AIM-9M (dogfight missile, also good for snapshots within 8NM head-on)

Just don't believe every missile gets you a kill ince within DLZ. Every missile has an effect on your target and you can use this to your advantage. Bandit running away but only 3NM out? Too far for the 9 but a 7 will make him snake to get you closer or he will even turn into you as a last ditch effort. When he does, shoot a heater at him but prepare to merge.

Re flew the 4 head on targets and held my first launch till 9nm. Got off the other 3 quickly and had 3 kills and one damaged which I finished off with my cannon.

So as you guys said the ticket is launch the 120 under 10nm!

With anything each missile has it's usefulness. First let me address your ET issue..

The reason they are not flare resistant is because you're most likely hotter then the flare and by that I mean you're either in Full ab or you're in full throttle. The ET's will almost always go for a flare if you're at idle. So if you know you've got an ET on the way chop throttle, toss flares and a slight course correction.

Second; use of the aim7. I can tell you this the aim 7 is a wonderfull missile if you know how to use it.. The aim7 is not a LONG range missile. HOW EVER! it can be. It loves high altitude high speed launches and Im talking 40,000ft or higher M1.4 or greater. I've gotten many Multiplayer kills using the aim7 at around 15nm. The issue though is needing to support that missile. and when you're at 40+k ft and your foe is down on the deck you have to NOSE over to keep lock. and decend with the aim7. If there is any foe in close proximity you're screwed as you will be in the cons in no time and well that means everyone can visualy pick you up.

With that being said. The best time to use an aim7 is more for close less then 5nm and against a high alpha maneuvering target. the aim7 seems to be able to TURN

extremely well while burning.

Keep in mind that the aim7 has a little bit more reach then the aim9 in lower altitudes but is not as quick off the rail.

Best of luck.

If your desired effect on the target is making the pilot defecate his pants laughing then you can definitely achieve it with a launch like that.

I know if you're not already good flying MP seems like an impossible learning curve but you should just fly MP regardless. Plenty of people to learn from. It's also probably better to stay at 1v1 and 1v2 at most until you're very good at those.

Flying against the AI will only teach you silly habits. You'll develop tactics based on the AI's reactions and this is not something that'll work against any human opponent.

OK Blaze what would be a MP group to start with? I'm in EST time zone and I would like to be with a group that is also willing to help me learn. Any suggestions?

You don't necessarily need a group. Our server and the TS would be a start, you can usually ask other people about things. Obviously not as good having a trainer, but it's alright.

As far as squadrons go, I have no idea. There are a lot of them now :)

Can you think of a better approach?

I started on the 104th server a few years ago (2012 maybe?), played with the guys on there and learned a LOT! The vast majority of the MP community is quite helpful.

Some things are really hard to learn, but you'll get there if you're determined.

Good luck!

That was snarky in your own mind. It's a pretty fair question given the relative lack of information for the setup. Analysis of your options is the mainstay of a good air to air combatant. What did you contribute? :)

That's more like it, CJ. Good job! The 120 really does, like several indicated, need a launch pretty up close and personal... unless you are very high and fast.
