NEODARK Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 What's the maximum "sustained" altitude you've been able to achieve in LockOn? Dunno if this has been tried before, but Im bored at work... Anyway, the rules are simple. 1- Use any default flyable 2- No ordinance 3- Any fuel quantity you desire 4- No wind (leave @ 0 on ME) 5- Post a screenshot (optional) 6- Reading from SEA LEVEL. :) 7- Level flight for @ least 10 seconds (No Saturn V attempts @ 0 airspeed) 8- Post in feet/meters :pilotfly:
Pilotasso Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I have sustained supersonic speed in the F-15 at 60000 feet. :) .
Arbitrator Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 did you start off at that alt or you climb to 60000 feet? i can do over 60000 feet but that's like very max and i'm around 200 knots true speed and i'm like in a 20 something degree angle. how can you do supersonic at that alt? however one thing i did b4 in 1.02(haven't tried it in 1.12a) is that i setup my f15 at very very high and have my speed over 1000 knots, then the f15 did not slow down at that alt and speed even i did level fight, it seems like going out of the reach of the gravity. Thats probably a glitch in the code although I havent tried it to see. I'm guessing the game calculates the amount of air available at any given alt and uses this to compute the power generated by your a/cs engines based on your current airspeed. The slower you are going the harder your engines have to work to produce the thrust required to keep you airborne, and vice-versa if you have a high starting speed then you have more air moving into your intakes to allow you to sustain this speed. So for the challenge, should we start from sea level at 300kts or can we abuse the mission editor? ;)

I stated on runway and climbed at mach 0.9, stabilized at 25000 feet form maximum speed there and then maintained supersonic flight climbing into 60000. I have a track on these boards somewhere demosntrating this and other stuff. .
NEODARK Posted July 28, 2006 Author Posted July 28, 2006 you can do either I guess.. (I thought people would do this on ME to save time) you can do either, but please indicate how it was achieved. (I'll have to try this out, tom first thing.. As I just now got home 11PM here) :(
nscode Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Here's a "absolute maximum" excercise I got form a MiG-21 manual, but works great for birds that we have too. -take off, climb to 2000m -accelerate to 1200 km/h IAS -begin climb and adjust thrust and climb speed to maintain 1200 km/h soon you'll go over 20 km up and over mach 2.3 :) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

This way I've reached 28km in my Flanker! Sorry, no pics for this moment! So it don't count.

The F-15 should be able to fly supersonic at 60 000 feet anyways. Its designed to go high and fly efficient. Its so much BS in this sim that you bleed so much speed just trying to get up there although you know that in real life the aircraft has the aerodynamics and the engines to achieve such an altitude and use it to its advantage to sustain a good airspeed and use less fuel. My dad flew with an Alphajet from Beja , Portugal to Fürstenfeldbruck in one go, he climbed to 40 000 feet and when he was up there, roughly 43 000 feet, he had literarily used less gas than a car on the distance. That was with a man in the back, no external fueltanks and loads of baggage in the baggage compartments. nscode Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Is it the sim that bleeds speed, or you not knowing how to do it? ;) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
pschelchshorn Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 dude, im a pilot in real life with aircraft where you have to know how to deal with airspeed. Sealpup Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 dude, im a pilot in real life with aircraft where you have to know how to deal with airspeed. But do you fly bricks with wings and two big engines up to sub-orbit in real life?
Colt40Five Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Okay here's mine... 50% fuel, full AB take-off, held level until past M1 then 45deg nose up till about 30k then leveled off and built up speed till it maxed out then 10deg nose up until I felt I couldn't maintain speed anymore. Here's a zoom to ALT. 25% fuel, full AB take-off, held level until past M1 then 90deg straight up until stall... 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Are you sure that's 200 knots TAS? I'm thinking its probably 200 knots IAS, your TAS at that altitude will be much higher than IAS. :smilewink:
