Hey bud, wanna fly some formation with a stable team but you don't have any friends to fly with online? We've got the solution! The IAT AI mission !!

In the IAT AI training mission you can fly with a stable 3 ship VIC formation:

The formation will fly straight for 30 minutes just for you !!

Want more? Ok so here you have also a Line Abreast formation just 100 meters above the vic:

and if you run out of fuel, don't worry, look up right, there is a refueller!

Just few notes about the mission:

This mission is playable offline and online with 6 pilots.

As you start to fly the AI aircrafts will speed up to 540 Km/h, I have no idea why but you can always ask it to ED.

As you start the mission you'll have just 20% of fuel, better go up to the big bird and get gas.

If you fly in front of the AI aircrafts they will run away and you'll need to restart the mission.

Have fun !

Very cool Guru! Now do these missions use the AI with its speed hold modulation algorithm inherited from Lock-On or is it done through Phantom or some other way of editing to have them fly so close together and hold speed (power setting)?

they fly stable only if you select a certain speed range (500kmh is good) and if you select LOCK ALTITUDE in waypoint 0 (ahah why?? dunno..). They can turn but you loose formation... I hope they add more features to the AI in next versions...

SWEET! I was very much wanting to ask you guys to make something along these lines.

A setup formation of planes with a missing slot, so one could simply go up and screw around with them, or feel in place. This definitely will help everyone, it really is appreciated!

GURU, I haven't done anything single-player for so long, but how do you get the AI airplanes to fly a wedge formation and most importantly, that tight?!

it's just.. Illusion ;-) eheh

I placed the AI aircraft with the use of a microscope... and I respected the visual limit of them.. (1 mm tighter and they see eachother and break away) (in the future, this option as selectable would be highly appreciated).

First I put the aircraft in the map... I fully zoom in it and start creating something like a formation.. and fly the mission, then back to editor and correct positions.. if wingmen are sucked a bit they see the leader and run away.. that' the millimetric maximum bearing they can fly without see the leader.. move them back 1 inch and they run away.

To have stable speed (normally the speed oscillates +-8kmh) you must choose LOCK ALTITUDE in waypoint 0. For some strange reason the speed become stable... but, when they are altitude locked they can fly only few speeds ..

if you write 450kmh or 500 or 520... they will always speed up to 540.. know why?? I don't. (btw 540kmh = 81,5% RPM with the default load out of my mission.. just to know).

Another small issue is the altitude difference.. they always step up few inches from north to south (the northern aircraft is higher... why?? ahaha). But just few inches...

Without an overlay grid is difficult to place them in the map but I used a trasparent piece of plastic with a grid printed on it with my inkjet... and I used the same grid to place the waypoints 1 in same position..

Another strange behaviour.. they do not change the AOA with the speed.. so the player aircraft looks always with few more degrees of AOA...

If you shoot them they don't run away (AI?)... just a funny note...

Requests to ED devs:

If you got some spare hours in the night can you add these features?:

1- Fix the small bugs mentioned above

2- Add RPM value to the AI editable settings...

3- Add Maximum angle of bank while turning option

4- Add proggressive curves for climbs.. dives.. turns

We will be able to do turning aircrafts, climbing diving... to follow without RPM variation and with soft maneuvering.

5- MOST IMPORTANT !!!! Add "Fly with player aircraft recorded in a track" so I'll be able to do my airshow myself and finally pubblish my damn video AHAH.. btw a good tool for aerobatic teams.. more than a tool, a dream.

Only in Lock-On, only in Lock-On... Good grief GURU! I know what you went through, but that's off the chart!

I don't think we'll see all these features and they'd really only add to the complexity of the problem. It would be nice to have a new editor from scratch. The one item you brought up that I really like is the option of "Tach hold" or "RPM hold" on AI aircraft, as this pertains to real-life formation flying. Having said that though, the ONLY true way to fly formation is in multiplayer and as nice as all these practice tools are (that we have to go to such extreme's to create), nothing... nothing can beat real-time, pilot-to-pilot practice (and as long as everyone's schedule works out, it eliminates all the hassles of Lock-On or limitations there of).

Very cool mission though GURU! Hat's off for the initiative and meticulous work.
