fitness88 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 (edited) Before jumping into a multi-player server, besides looking for a low ping number and low number of pilots in mission, is there any other way to know if I'm going to have a smooth flight? Some of my flights have been very choppy and unenjoyable. I have 150 megabits download and 80 megabits upload. What's your average ping to the servers you fly on? Thank you. BaD CrC Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Playing from the US in a french server with 120ms ping and things are pretty smooth to me. What are your pings? https://www.blacksharkden.com http://discord.gg/blacksharkden

When I'm in the server list window and I see the list of pings beside the server names, I take it the smaller the ping number the faster. Is that my ping to each of the individual servers or is it their ping to me...and what would be the difference?
159th_Falcon Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Ping from them to your, or from you to them is the same thing really. Its just a measurement of time for a packet of data to be sent from A to B. And indeed the lower the better. Mind you though, pingwise in DCS i can play on servers whit pings up to about 250 and still have a smooth running game. Your issue might be a server side enforcement of (certain) graphics settings that your system cant handle. You might want to check your FPS online and offline and try to compare. (L CTRL + Pause/Break key will bring up a FPS counter in the top left corner of the screen) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)
ESAc_matador Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I play smooth with 300 from brazil to a spainish server. 99% o times everything goes ok

Only on some servers does my FPS goes up and down with many freeze ups for 1-3 seconds. Keep in mind the lag issue is only with some servers, not all. I fly many servers that have the same feel and FPS as flying off line. So I ask what is it with these other servers that I should look out for? Edited February 26, 2016 by fitness88
FlightControl Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 The lag may also have to do with the servers having an overloaded cpu... Some missions are designed having too much things going on at the same time... Also, it really depends on the combat situation also. Put 6 AAA batteries in idle mode and CPU still be low, but when they fire to a helicopter flying by, CPU will peak up. Most of the time, cpu is the bottleneck. I flew away from any other aircraft so I was totally alone. My FPS were 30-50. What was happening was my j-stick inputs hesitated at times and as I looked around the movements were also choppy at times. This seems to happen on the 104th server all the time not every server do I have this issue.
NeilWillis Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Your proximity to other aircraft isn't exactly the issue with CPU bottlenecking. If there is an event occurring somewhere else, that will still affect your update times. The best advice I can give is to find and use a server that is consistently giving you good results. Servers can be set up by individuals running it on their only PC alongside their participation, or they could be mega powerful stand alone devices situated on internet arteries with the resultant high performance. So, find a server that works, and then stick with it. Better still, why not join a squadron, and get all the benefits of that as well?
Shahdoh Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 There are some settings that increase the network bandwidth DCS uses that can help, particularly on servers with a lot of clients. These settings are highly recommended by the larger servers like the 104th, 373vFS(Blue Flag) and the Virtual Aerobatics. http://www.virtual-aerobatics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1841 Good luck!

WC Visit the Hollo Pointe DCS World server -- an open server with a variety of COOP & H2H missions including Combined Arms. All released missions are available for free download, modification and public hosting, from my Wrecking Crew Projects site.
Shahdoh Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Actually, I use those on the server as well. Seems to work well enough.
fitness88 Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 (edited) I just flew another Multi-Player mission 'open conflict'. My vid mem [ctrl-Pause] numbers [14876.80MB] were 3-4 times higher than when I fly 'instant action' single missions. When my 'vid mem' hit 14876.80MB I lost control of my plane because of the lag freeze for 15-20 seconds at a time. I finally had to bail out had no control. I can't remember having this issue flying v1.12 Could it be a setting in my Nvidia control panel or maybe the options in DCS. I've turned down all my settings which I didn't have to do in V1.12 Edited March 3, 2016 by fitness88
fitness88 Posted March 4, 2016 Author Posted March 4, 2016 I play smooth with 300 from brazil to a spainish server. 99% o times everything goes ok Are you playing with 1 or 3 monitors?
