Capn kamikaze Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 I've been trying to learn the AIM-7, and I've noticed that when I'm against MiG-23's armed with R-24's they're launching at about the same range I am, but according to my research the R-24 should have only about 60-70% of the range of the AIM-7M, the AIM-7M should be around the 50km mark (45 in the encyclopedia) and the R-24 around the 35km mark (20km in the encyclopedia) Yet they're launching them at about the same time I am, maybe a few seconds after, which would indicate that the actual in game modeling of them is wrong, or the encyclopedia entrys are wrong.
Sryan Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 AI's like to launch at Rmax. are you waiting for RTR? Check my F-15C guide
Capn kamikaze Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 Nope, just slightly in R max, maybe about 2-3km within it, and mine are running out of steam while theirs are able to get to where I am. By the looks of it they are launching at Rmax.
probad Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 (edited) so just fly a little circle and by the time your nose comes around their missiles are out of steam/guidance interrupted/etc and you can just come in and zonk them. just because the ai does the braindead max range joust doesn't mean you have to be just as braindead as them edit: nevermind i noticed op's username (jk) edit2: sorry op i completely misread your post Edited February 27, 2016 by probad
Capn kamikaze Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 I'm putting them on my gimbal limits, and slowing right down after launch, but it's looking more and more like the AIM-7's range is just completely under modeled or the R-24's is exaggerated.
pepin1234 Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 (edited) The are unclear things around our R missiles. 1- After the new performance announced by ED, all Russian BVR family speed info in our encyclopedia was decreased one MACH, Currently ~3500, before more than 4500. 2- R-24 and R-27R have almost the same performance in game. The newest R-77 have even worst performance in game. 3- R-27 ER seem to be the only option against Aim-7M. In game our R-27R is far behind in performance. 4- This is the order in the current game stage in missile performance: R-27ER>AIM-120>AIM-7M>>>R-27R>R-77>R-24. Notice the newest R-77 is only one step better than R-24. 5- IRL the lower weight of missiles leave you the option for better maneuverability... The missile kinematics don't match the encyclopedia (nor should they). Shoot within 8 miles and crank HARD - You'll win. Lord of Salt
Capn kamikaze Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 (nor should they). That I disagree with strongly, no matter how I set it up I'm not getting anywhere near what it claims is possible, high altitude, max possible speed, head on against an opponent going max capable speed (both of us supersonic) and at no point does my Rmax get even 3/4 of where I'm lead to believe it should be. At most it seems to be at the 20km mark and not much more.

That is not what I am seeing, at the moment from a purely kinematic POV the R-24 is just not losing as much speed as I would expect, and the AIM-7 is like it is hitting a wall. As an experiment I was waiting and waiting until I got a launch warning, and then firing and then I was watching the missiles and their speed, I didn't care if I got shot down, I just wanted to watch the missiles, and it just looks like the AIM-7 hemorrhages speed, while the R-24 retains it in effect making their ranges little different, even though I can launch at a further range. If I have to wait until 8 miles to get a confirmed kill (I have done that, and yes it does work) then the MiG should have to wait until about 5 with the R-24....
probad Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 oh okay yeah thanks for telling us again that playable missiles have drag issues
pepin1234 Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 we can change the launch action for AI regarding the range to the target in A-A combat? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
GGTharos Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 The R-24 isn't using the new missile FM, IIRC.
