Focha Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Hi all, Does anyone also encounters the PK-3 lacking effectiveness against infantry and soft targets? I know it's a 7.62 weapon but last night I was attacking an infantry group with it and I've made 5 passes by the book with a 20º dive and I never got an infantry unit... And I tried with a fuel truck too, and nothing happened. Do you guys experience the same? Probably it's normal since the weapons caliber. I switched to the 23 mm barrel, Gsh-23, and they were devastated. :joystick: So, what is the good use of the PK-3 pods? doodenkoff Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Well, the Gsh-23 fires HE rounds; which tend to improve damage. It isn't because it's simply larger. The .30 caliber round from the pods has to rely on direct hits to soft targets to cause damage. So unless you can pack a lot of infantry into a very small area, you won't get much damage. I just thought of trying the pod guns against a small boat. I would presume they are wooden and relatively flimsy compared to any land vehicle. Win 10 | i7 4770 @ 3.5GHz | 32GB DDR3 | 6 GB GTX1060
1.JaVA_Platypus Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 The PK3 gunpods are not of much use against land-targets. I don't know why. I tried various truck targets as well. Nothing appearant happened. Probably because of the aforemented reasons. But try a bit of AA, I shot down airplanes with it. Probably also the reason they aren't used very often in real-life? I can't seem to find any pictures of real-life L-39's with the PK3 gunpod. Happy Flying! :pilotfly:
King_Hrothgar Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 If you check the log you will notice it takes 4-5 hits with them to kill a single infantryman. And since they are traditional 7.62mm rounds, they have to score a direct hit to count at all. It should probably be changed to 1 hit takes down an infantryman. Not sure why it's set to so many. I haven't had any issues against trucks.
Enduro14 Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 (edited) Yes that is very inaccurate and hope it changes throughout all of Dcs world. The damage modelling needs some work dont feel bad a mk82 hits 10 to 20 meters away from infantry and doesnt kill them with stock settings. Needs a fix bad, try this and maybe ask the Modder if they can touch up the guns also. Im very familiar with how effective a single 7.62 round can be to a single infantry man. Should not be 5 to 6 direct hits http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=161371 But that being said most who are killed by a a burst of rounds generally get hit by more than one round so guess it could go both ways in this instance. Fri13 Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 The inaccuracy is not a problem, it is better have a spread than firing all 7.62 to small area accurately, as you are not anyways aiming to individual infantry, as you shouldn't even be able see one if such isn't running or against some very clear background like runway. And 7.62 would rip vehicles quickly. Only APC with stronger armor could withstand some of the hits, but firing even longer bursts to some IVF like M2 Bradley or M113 would start doing some damage to optics, radios etc. If the target would be a truck or any other unarmored vehicle, you would very likely just punch if full of holes, kill infantry on it, shut down the engine and maybe (maybe) cause an fire. If we ever get the moral system implemented to DCS ground units, then these gunpods will come handy. As you could give effective support against infantry and even against lightly armored vehicles. But now it is more like a hollywood effect at best (or worst?). As I would as well change the amount of smoke and ricochettes you get by firing those at ground. i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

Hook47 Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 I can effectively kill soft vehicles with the PK-3 pods, they take about the same amount of hits as the M-134 on the Huey. As for infantry, yes I agree they take too many hits. I made a mod here on the forums which adds the 23-250 23mm gun pods to the L-39ZA, which is not unrealistic, if you are interested. What I like about the PK-3 pods is lots of ammo!
