I've often been distracted by the fact that the center detent of the slider on the WH HOTAS zoom view is not equal to the default zoom of the cockpit (as with num5). I would have to find the center detent, then pull it back until the zoom was correct. In the heat of battle, any distraction is bad. I found a corrective action.

 

- Control Setup

- Axis Assign

- Select JoySlider1 next to Zoom View

- select Axis Tune

- Check box 'Slider'

- Set Curvature to -15 (or preference)

 

Your center detent will now have you zoomed back a bit.

Default zoom can be adjusted, so this kind of setting is very specific.

I prefer to keep my zoom slider linear. It's a matter of taste.

If you adjust your default zoom in the LUA, it still doesn't account for the detent on the HOTAS slider not being equal to the default setting of zoom. Of course, you could compensate further back in the LUA value, but you will still have a disparity. I'm not saying everyone has to use this method though, just contributing where I can.

I had exactly the same issue, the dent in the middle position of slider in TM warthog makes it perfect for configuring it so that it corresponds to the default zoom. To make it working:

 

1. check this thread. You may use the attached server.lua file or make the configuration on your own. (I have to admit that I should post an updated version as the 6_dof values are missing for some of the planes. In result the TIR is not working - quite easy to notice when this happens:music_whistling:. At the same time its quite easy to fix - just copy paste the values from the default files. Actually I'll post an updated version today evening).

2. Set the local gCameraViewAngleLimits value according to your needs. In example the values {30.000000, 150.000000} will result in minimum 30 degrees of field of view (aka max zoom), 150 is setting for the widest possible view (aka lowest zoom)

3. Open SnapViews.lua file. For each aircraft the position with index 13 is the default one. Make sure that viewAngle is exactly in the middle between your min/max zoom values. In other words:

 

viewAngle = min + (max-min)/2

 

In the example it's: min = 30, viewAngle = 90, max = 150. Note that Mi-8 is an exception as it's max FOV value is configured on the advanced tab in DCS options.

I think changing the LUA values may be an overcomplicated solution. I don't want to change the overall 'field of view' or 'angle', I just don't want to have to go to the middle position on the zoom slider and pull it back a bit each time. I've found that quickly adding a curvature to the slider in the control setup accomplishes this simply and quickly (since the root issue is my slider, and not my overall viewAngle values)

You may leave your view angles (the default ones) as they are and adjust the max/min values so that the default fov is in the middle in between them. This will give you good, linear feeling when zooming in/out as also you'll be sure that the central "dent" on the slider is exactly the default view.

Thanks StrongHarm, very useful. I have recently got a very wide acreen (21:9 with 3440 x 1440) and the default zoom is way to close. I will try that!

Just adjust the center in the axis settings. Very easy to do and easy to change and repeat to find the perfect Spot.

Thanks Stronghold. I had a thread recently about this too as like BalticDragon I went 21:9.

 

As with your thread there was a lot of people not really understanding the problem.

 

What 'should' happen is that when you adjust the default zoom with RAlt0 the centre detent should update to that view also. This doesn't happen. I think your adjusting the axis curves is about the only way as technically it's a control issue, not really an issue with the view angle itself, just where on the slider it corresponds too.
