JazonXD Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Hi everyone, I'd like to know how to use the emergency brakes on the A-10C? I come in for a landing with hydraulics all shot up and I decide to go straight for the emergency brakes and not bother to try the normal brakes as I don't think they'd work. However, after pulling the emergency brake lever, literally nothing happens. The anti-lock brake switch automatically turns off, which I know should happen, but otherwise, the plane does not slow down. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. mvsgas Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 (edited) Looking for more info, this is what I got so far; Emergency Brake System An emergency brake system is provided in the event that the normal brake system fails. The emergency brake system is activated by first pulling the EMER BRAKE handle fully aft and then depressing the rudder/brake pedals. The right hydraulic system supplies the emergency brake system which has the same capabilities as the normal brake system except anti-skid protection. The emergency brake system is fully independent of the normal brake system except for the dual power brake valve, shuttle valve, and brake assembly. Should left hydraulic system pressure become available while emergency braking is selected the emergency brake system still retains control of the brakes. Emergency braking power is provided by the emergency brake accumulator should the right hydraulic system fail. Actuation of the EMER BRAKE handle ports right hydraulic system pressure to the emergency brake system. Right hydraulic system pressure provides unlimited emergency braking. Edit; Did you have pressure on left system? Edited April 22, 2016 by mvsgas To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
St3v3f Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 It's not done by just pulling the handle, you still need to apply the toe brakes. The emergency brake doesn't function as a parking brake. aka: Baron [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Gliptal Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 As St3v3f said. Also, keep in mind you only have a set amount of "charges" when using the emergency brake, so do not tap and don't try to taxi with it.

Ahh okay. In my case, I only have a button for the brake. Does that mean that it will always lock when I am using the Ebrake? If I had a rudder toe brake, I can modulate the pressure and prevent it from locking right? Snoopy Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 You should have approximately three pumps before the emergency brake accumulator is depleted. v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website

To point out, you only have a limited number of emergency brake applications if the emergency brakes are selected AND the right hydraulic system is not providing pressure. If the right hydraulic system is providing pressure, applications are unlimited.

In the case that I only have LIMITED number of usage, how long can i hold the brakes each time? -Pv- Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 It's more a matter of how many times you can pump the break, not how long. If I had to use it and both hyd systems have failed, I would hold it to a full stop and leave the plane. -Pv-
RocketRod Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 If your APU is available, it is another emergency option. I have only seen this a couple of times while crewing the Hawg. Bird strike and compressor stall requiring shutdown.
Flamin_Squirrel Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 If your APU is available, it is another emergency option.. No it isn't. The APU hydraulic function is for maintenance use only.
