agentdarnell Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Planning on Enlisting US Air Force this summer. That count? :D Not till you actually serve. Too many things can change. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
xaoslaad Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Not till you actually serve. Too many things can change. Agree. Had people say if I joined they'd join. I joined. They didn't. I'd also suggest you consider college, ROTC, and getting commissioned. It will take a little longer, but I think it would be even more rewarding. And take it from me, if you decide on college later while you're working and supporting yourself and possiblt a wife and kids that is NO fun. Two+ years 40+ hours of work a week and 40+ hours dedicated to school finishing what I started before I enlisted. I didn't do DCS, social media, or much of anything that wasn't school or work. It was maddening. I was very grateful for the G.I Bill, but that was not the right way.
agentdarnell Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Yep college first if you can Rotc or a military academy. If not go to college then enlist. I did it the hard way and went to college between deployments and after I got out. Really not the way I would suggest going about it. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Beamscanner Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Planning on Enlisting US Air Force this summer. That count? :D You'll enjoy it! The Air Force really takes care of their people. And don't bother with all the college talk. If your not interested or not ready for college, don't worry about it. Too many make the wrong mistake and force themselves through a degree they don't want / cant afford / or never needed for their ultimate career. On a side note. As far as commissions go, I don't see the logic in immediately making a 4 year grad an officer over a distinguished active duty member who's been leading men for years. (yes, some programs exist taking only a handful a year, but the majority of Officers are straight out of college) If it were up to me, no one would receive a commission until they had finished a term of service as an enlisted.
QuiGon Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 (edited) German Army active till 2010. Now reserve. agentdarnell Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 German Army active till 2010. Now reserve. I hope this is not US only here ;) Nope not us only. I have served with many excellent special operations and airborne service members from all over the world. Jumped out of airplanes, fought, sweated, bled, laughed and cried with some of the best. Anyone who serves their country gets my respect. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
mvsgas Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 USAF, 1996 to 2012 To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
StandingCow Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 I was active USAF - KC 135 Crew Chief. Then went guard and switched to Information Management... which was horrible. 5900X - 32 GB 3600 RAM - 1080TI My Twitch Channel ~Moo

(yes, some programs exist taking only a handful a year, but the majority of Officers are straight out of college) If it were up to me, no one would receive a commission until they had finished a term of service as an enlisted. You may not see the point (and I may agree to an extent), but that's how it works and having a degree increases your pay, responsibility, and opens up options that would otherwise be closed to you (pilot being just a singular example.) I didn't see the point in a degree either before I went in, got a good paying job, etc. (you may gather I joined quite late), and later fully regretted that decision. It's something that at age 18 may be hard to carefully consider, but an attempt needs to be made regardless. I thought I was going to be career USMC, but after 4 years of not seeing each other (ex-wife was Navy) we decided it'd be nice to see each other for more than a week at a time and got out. My Crohn's disease was also coming out of remmission as well and had I stayed there's a strong chance I would have ended up as a medical separation. Things change, even with the best of intentions and planning, as someone already said. There are certainly jobs, and good jobs at that, that don't require a degree. And even some that say they do don't really (I held a couple IT jobs that supposedly required a degree before I had one). And there are programs in the military that will pay for you to go to college so hoping to take advantage of one of those is potentially realistic. There are programs like MECEP when I was in. And at the them the Navy was looking to send people with some college to finish in order to commission them in the nurse corps. I nearly applied for that one after some proding as medicine is something of interest. And I certainly don't advocate racking up huge amounts of debt without a plan to pay it off. Even before I had the G.I. Bill I managed to pay as I went with internship jobs, part time work, and applying for scholarships, though I admit that gets harder to do by the day with rising tuitions and both a stagnant job market and salaries. I hardly think that's a decision to be fluffed off lightly though. If (s)he wants it later it's going to be all the much harder even with the government paying. Put it this way, do you think they offer such an incentive because most people who serve successfully take advantage of it? Edited June 7, 2016 by xaoslaad
