Krupi Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 (edited) Hi chaps, I owned a DK2 and have been hearing different things about the FoV. Could a past DK2 owner give there opinion on the differences between the FoV between DK2, CV1 and Vive. I have seen some information on reddit etc however the Internet seems to be so full of pitch forks and fanboys it is hard to know who to believe. Thank you. I am expecting my rift next month however I am starting to get cold feet, I don't want to blow £1000 on a the Rift and a pc upgrade and then just never use it, as a WW2 fan I would mainly use it for the prop modules and I know the resolution just might not cut it online :( however immersion matters more to me than being on top of the leaderboard :) Edited June 9, 2016 by Krupi Windows 10 Pro | ASUS RANGER VIII | i5 6600K @ 4.6GHz| MSI RTX 2060 SUPER | 32GB RAM | Corsair H100i | Corsair Carbide 540 | HP Reverb G2 | MFG crosswind Pedals | Custom Spitfire Cockpit Project IX Cockpit
npole Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 VIVE has a better FOV... but as of today, DCS is better optimized for the RIFT it seems, but bad optimized overall.. so yes, it doens't work perfectly, but it works better in the RIFT. We don't know in the future.. I imagine they will fix the performance issue for both those the HMD, but if you play only DCS, the RIFT today works better. For the whole rest (if you play other games.. etc.), the VIVE is vastly superior to the RIFT, the room scale tracking is mind blowing and you can experience what's the real VR (forget everything you experienced so far...).
Krupi Posted June 9, 2016 Author Posted June 9, 2016 At the moment I only plan on using it for DCS. I don't really have the space in my room for room scale anyway, the Rift will probably do room scale when the touch controllers arrive. What kind of difference is there between the Vive and rift FoV, some say it is not noticeable others say it is definitely taller? The comfort and polish of the Rift is keeping me from switching. adrianstealth Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 Ive used a dk2 since close to launch , Now a CV1, my best explanation : Fov I noticed no difference between the two at first The cv1 is much better than the dk2 in many ways I was blown away by this Since iracing compatibility ( I used iracing pretty much 100% of the time ) I've noticed that the CV1 has more vertical FOV than the dk2 , horizontal maybe about the same so overall fov is improved Ps head tracking is seamless so FOV is not much concern for me
Krupi Posted June 9, 2016 Author Posted June 9, 2016 Excellent, thanks Adrian. How do you find target spotting and dogfighting in the CV1? Damocles Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 While the Rift puts you in the "Pit" like never before, and is a fantastic experience, jaw droppingly "Wow" I would be reluctant to recommend it for prop combat. FOV isn't an issue for most flying and the limitations aren't readily apparent, I also notice far more of what actually goes on in my FOV than I ever did with TrackIR and triple screens. The big issue is for bread and butter knife fights, checking six, especially when switching from side to side just isn't adequate. Cockpit canopy limitations excluded, 130- 140 degrees is what you can expect to see, maybe another 10-20 if you exploit a swivel chair but less than periferal vision would give in real life. Along with resolution limitations it can make dogfighting harder than it needs to be. I also find the low resolution does't give adequate distance que's, anything outside a couple of hundred yards and the target lacks enough definition to judge distance/depth. I appreciate that might not be what you want to hear. There are positives though. Judging where a target is, in 3D space, relative to you as you jink about is far more natural than with TrackIR and despite the FOV inadequacies it does make you fully appreciate what it must have been like to try and fight with restricted canopy views to the rear, in a way that TrackIR never could (yes 109, I'm thinking of you). Hopefully eye tracking, along with foviated views, CV2 (fingers crossed) will make all these deficiencies a thing of the past, we just have to wait a little bit longer. That said the Rift/Vive still provides a great, unparalleled, experience in DCS.
Shabi Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 One trick I've done with the vive recently is to remove the foam velcro face padding and cut up some felt, the velcro will hold it on and your eyes sit a bit closer, increasing the FOV. You get some nice red marks on your head but for me everything is a bit clearer and the FOV bump is fun. Krupi Posted June 10, 2016 Author Posted June 10, 2016 Thanks for the honest reply Damocles, now I really need to think about cancellation or just go for it. I know this is the future and the next iteration will improve the issues you have highlighted the question is when will CV2 and Vive 2 arrive I doubt next year potentially 2018. Argghhh I can't decide :( Windows 10 Pro | ASUS RANGER VIII | i5 6600K @ 4.6GHz| MSI RTX 2060 SUPER | 32GB RAM | Corsair H100i | Corsair Carbide 540 | HP Reverb G2 | MFG crosswind Pedals | Custom Spitfire Cockpit Project IX Cockpit
Shabi Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I'd go CV1 for now (if you can get it soon) and enjoy the benefits of asynchronous timewarp. But for anything where you're not doing a seated experience vive is the obvious choice at this time. WindyTX Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I second get a CV1. May be because I am a pilot in RL but CV1 is close enough and Pixel density increase makes the resolution appear much better. I could never go back to a monitor it just doesnt compare.
