Leatherneck is creating the F-14A/B, not the D, with that being said, they are making the TCS/EOS only.

The F-14A had an IRST in mid 70 years, but that was replaced by the TCS later.

This may help you to understand:

As you can see, under the nose there's also the ALQ-100 ECM pod.

Mission: "To intercept and destroy aircraft and airborne missiles in all weather conditions in order to establish and maintain air superiority in a designated area. To deliver air-to-ground ordnance on time in any weather condition. And to provide tactical reconaissance imagery" - F-14 Tomcat Roll Call

I had no idea that the tomcat had irst like the flanker, thats pretty cool.

Also may i ask what the TCS is?

TCS(Tactical camera system), enables the F-14 crew to visually identify hostile aircrafts at ranges about 10 miles. It is also used as a EOS.

Don't ask, here's the answer: 95% of my posts are edited because I have OCD.

DCS : F-14A is supposed to be mid 80s, so I would guess it will be TCS, as original IRST was apparently removed fairly early on, not performing up to par it seems.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

Yes. The IRST was removed in 1976, if I'm not mistaken.

Also, unless I am mistaken, TCS is a high magnification camera and nothing more, it is intented to provide BVR visual identification possibilities to F-14, so it can engage targets BVR more autonomously.

Unless I am missing something it does not have target searching capabilities as EOS in Su-27 or MiG-29, which, are true IRST sensors. Though I haven't read much on TCS so I'm not %100 sure, but I would be very surprised if TCS has EOS like capabilities, if by EOS one means systems on Su-27 and MiG-29. If it had such capability, there wouldn't be much point in doubling up redundantly and putting both side by side on F-14D nose would it?

Yes, you're kinda right.

Well, using the TCS you can guide AIM-54s to the enemy aircraft. Not sure if the TCS can guide the AIM-9. So yes, it does have targeting searching capabilities, but certainly not like the Su-27 or MiG-29.

Darkbrother, you could guide the winder to a target using the TCS in SEAM.

Obviously this only slaved the seeker to the TCS, you couldn't make in flight adjustments.
