Hello, i'm new to DCS i ran across it after I recently got the Oculus Rift as a gift. I went out and bought the Saitek fly 5 to get started. That is probably not the ideal controller but I was wondering if anyone had a good setup file for DCS to use with it? I'm trying to play the game with the Rift but I dont know which are the most important buttons to map. Any help would be awesome.

Also, any suggestions for better flight stick and throttle is appreciated.

Thanks again!

Thanks Brewnix - this looks like an amazing community - I'm really just getting my feet wet and learning to fly (basics). I am focusing on the P51D and the A10 right now but hope to purchase all the modules over the next few months.

Good day mutsack. To be honest, I would start with something simpler than the A10, to get the feel of things. I got the printed manual, and its 671 pages (you can find it here. Recommended ). If you do want to jump into this awesome plane right away, just look up some Warthog control layouts, which are mapped like the real thing. Nothing beats feeling like you are using the hotas as its meant to be used, at least when it comes to core things like fire buttons, slew etc.

I havent played around with the P51D yet. Generally, I would recommend using quite a bit of time learning to use the software of your controller, and also going through the individual control mappings of each plane, to get an overview. There are several categories, and actually I think there is a specific category for hotas controls. Being away from my pc this weekend I cant double check this though. I would check out things like shifted commands, as that is really useful when there are dozens of potential controls which are useful to have on a hotas. After a lot of work (this isnt the easiest of hobbies) you will gradually become quite familiar with your setup, and will be able to map and configure future planes or helis with less of a hassle.

Oh, and check out my thead posted just below (or above) your post, regarding using clickable cockpits in VR. Should be a nice way to naturally use switches, buttons and mfd's while using your Oculus.

My system:

Win 10, Amd Ryzen 3700@stock GTX1080 Ti, 34" Asus G-sync ultrawide monitor, Ipad Air, 32 gigs of 3600 ram, complete CH HOTAS setup, Oculus Rift CV1/Trackir5 and a Saitek Quadrant

Regarding joystick, for entry level have a look at the VKB Gladiator that was recently released. While it does not currently have a separate throttle unit, it does have a throttle slider and uses pretty good electronics.

In the more expensive range, the TM Warthog setup is hard to beat - and DCS A-10c is already set up for it so basically plug and play for that module. Add an extension to it and some good rudder pedals like the MFG Crosswinds and it is a hard setup to beat.

Also, VKB will be introducing the Gladiator Pro ( better metal gimbal system), along with the Gunfighter series a little later, both should prove to be very good sticks. Those are not slated till later in the year hopefully.

Edit: Also the TM T16000M joystick would be another good entry level choice. Plus it uses the same TARGET software ( if you choose) for creating joystick profiles as the Warthog.

Thanks for your reply. I'm saving up and thinking about biting the bullet on the TM Warthog over the next month or so. It seems like people are happy with it and hopefully i will be able to grow into it with some dedication.

Thanks ChrisIhao. I the manual looks like a must. I will try the clickable cockpit controls this week!

No problem mate. Its quite intuitive indeed. But, of course I use this in tandem with a hotas. I can wholeheartedly recommend a complete CH hotas (also pedals), which I use myself. The controls are built like a tank, and seemingly never break down. I've had mine for 13 something years, and actually they still look brand new. Think professional industrial controllers. However, I do understand the appeal of the Warthog. Just wanted to give my two cents :)

Anyhow, enjoy this wonderful game and not at least your Rift. Cheers!

If I were You I would fly around with simpler joystick for some time to see If this flightsim is something for me before spending quite a chunk of money on the Warthog.

Of course, I hope You'll like the game, but there's nothing worse than breaking a piggybank and gearing up for some game only to discover a month later that you would rather play something else after all.

i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.

Thanks for the advice Art-J. I have been getting acclimated to the sim with my basic Saitek Cyborg 5 and I really enjoy playing the game and the complexity of it. It will probably take me a few months just to get the basics down and by then i will have enough saved up for the more advanced joystick so i can make a go / no go decision.
