I'm sure I recently read some discussions about someone being unable to land on the grass without bouncing around and being convinced it was a bug.

Can't find that discussion, but I have just tried it in VR and having no problems with landing on the grass at all. It was just after doing so that I remembered the discussion - so I recorded a second one (and then a crappy landing on the pan, just to show off how to do it badly...)

Yeah, just remember that all "grass" is not equal.

Running CSAR missions, landing/take off on airfield grass or road curb side grass - rarely caused damage if done with care.

However landing in some other "grass" areas caused unexplained damage (strange flight control on take off to hover transition) after picking up downed pilots. Usually the airframe would be a right-off after 3-4 landings/take offs.

That was when only the SA-342M was flyable. The flight model has improved a lot since then and from the MP demo "unexplained landing damage" looks to be fixed in the dev. build.

I'd need to fly lots of touch and go's in remote areas, to be sure of the current build but haven't been flying CSAR's recently so can't tell how things have changed.

I have a map I use for testing that has different surfaces I can land on and take off. Both structures (building, oil rigs, etc) and different grounds. Most test flights I do about 40-50 landings.

Plus you can actually skid the Gazelle on the grass both at low and high speeds. I got to experience it in the oculus rift recently while testing the multicrew functionality.

I'll do some more, in more remote areas - I need to practice, anyway.

Okay - just been up for more testing. The results so far were that I could land on grass on flat, lowland areas with no issues.

If I tried to land in an area of hills or mountains, i.e. not a flat area, I would have issues - but could have been hamfisted flying. If I tried to land in an area with "2D trees" it was worse.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find an area in the hills around Batumi, which did not have 2D trees on it and was flat.

I'll keep trying, though.

Hi.

By reading this page, I've started to wonder how flexible Gazelle's skids... in real life and in game.

I feel like that the skids are zero flexible, so helicopter tends to bounce while landing on concrete surfaces.

Then I'm thinking that that's why we have trouble while landing on grass?

Correct. I've done about 60 grass landings to test it and it's all good.

Grass landing was corrected in the last update, per the changelog.

I generally find that a good landing is required on rough turf (grass, hills etc). Good means minimum drift in any direction to stop the skids catching.

I think it is ok on rough turf at the mo.
