The AWG-9 radar operates in a high-power pulseDoppler

mode for long-range target detection and

tracking, multiple-target tracking and Phoenix missile

attacks. A conventional pulse mode is available for airto-ground

mapping and ranging and short-range

dogfight attacks with Sidewinder missiles and/or the

M61 Vulcan cannon. The radar provides continuous

wave target illumination for medium-range dogfights

using Sparrow air-to-air missiles.

Thanks.:)

Mission: "To intercept and destroy aircraft and airborne missiles in all weather conditions in order to establish and maintain air superiority in a designated area. To deliver air-to-ground ordnance on time in any weather condition. And to provide tactical reconaissance imagery" - F-14 Tomcat Roll Call

I'm quite sure that it didn't. However, it could emit on a frequency band that could allow for ground mapping (IIRC), though the necessary software (and hardware for the AWG-9) was never developed.

The APG-71 with it's false aperture could perform ground mapping, but the F-14D never had the proper software or development to use it.

As far as I've ever read (which could be wrong...) no version of the F-14 had A-G radar modes/capability.

Thanks, Nick. Good info as always:thumbup:

The APG-71 can also be linked to the infrared search and track set (IRSTS) for passive, long-range search making little use of the active radar.

Digital scan control and improved frequency agility are also part of the upgrade.

The low-side-lobe antenna is more difficult to jam.

Its mount is different, but the antenna retains the gimbal system used in the AWG-9.

In addition to the modes provided by the AN/AWG-9, the AN/APG-71 provides:

  • Manual Rapid Lock-on (MRL)
  • Pilot Automatic Lock-on (PAL)
  • Hot Range While Search (HRWS)
  • Vertical Scan Lock-on (VSL)
  • Pilot Lock-on Mode (PLM)
  • Raid Assessment (RA)
  • Ground Map (GM)
  • Air-to-Ground Ranging (AGR)

They are still not doing it. All that's said there is that they're not categorically rejecting the possibility of making it in future.

i386DX40@42 MHz w/i387 CP, 4 MB RAM (8*512 kB), Trident 8900C 1 MB w/16-bit RAMDAC ISA, Quantum 340 MB UDMA33, SB 16, DOS 6.22 w/QEMM + Win3.11CE, Quickshot 1btn 2axis, Numpad as hat. 2 FPH on a good day, 1 FPH avg.

DISCLAIMER: My posts are still absolutely useless. Just finding excuses not to learn the F-14 (HB's Swansong?).

Annoyed by my posts? Please consider donating. Once the target sum is reached, I'll be off to somewhere nice I promise not to post from. I'd buy that for a dollar!

There's a whole lot of distance between "might" and "will."

A lot of folks don't appreciate just how different of an aircraft the "Super" Tomcat was from the Tomcat. It's the same amount of difference that exists between the F-15A/B/C/D and the F-15E. If they ever do make an F-14D (which I hope they do), it's going to take a whole lot of work to make it happen.

My statement is in relation to the OP question and the admitted work LN is doing here and now. APG-71 information has no bearing on the question asked, or current plans.

This is what every thread becomes. Someone asks a question. People answer. Somebody comes along and throws a bunch of unrelated conjecture at the conversation. Clarification is made to keep the waters from being muddied. Definitions of words get discussed. Confusion is made in the minds of those not paying attention.

And then three months to a year from now, somebody is going to adamantly say, "we'll I remember LN saying they were going to make a D model Tomcat and now I'm mad it's just a B!"

Answer questions that are asked with topic pertinent responses.

Answer in accordance to what a developer has stated they are doing, versus what they might do at some distant point in the future.

It saves pissing matches, headaches, and time.

Fair enough, I was just sharing news I thought some people may have missed.
