Hi folks,

So i am aiming to upgrade my system, and I am wondering if I should go green or red...or in other words RX 480 or GTX 1060.

Hopefully this topic hasn't been discussed to death already (specially about these two cards comparison).

Obviously, I would also need to buy a compatible monitor with such card as well (G-sync or Freesync).

There are certain things which makes me wonder, such as:

  • RX 480 got 256-bit memory bus while as GTX got 192-bit
  • RX got 8 GB while GTX got 6 GB
  • GTX generally have better GPU clocks than RX 480

And how are the drivers from both vendors these days for DCS titles?

Note: I am aiming for 1080p gaming

The Nvidia path is more expensive but will generally give better performance in games.

G-Sync vs FreeSync - consider that G-Sync monitors are much more expensive.

6gb or 8gb is meaningless for 1080p and memory bus doesn't really mean anything when comparing different architectures.

anyway for DCS @ 1080P , both will give excellent results.

On what basic, do you state this ?

I dont belive this to be true... 6 or 8 GB does indeed nake a diffrence, compare to 4 or 2 GB.

I am by heart an AMD Guy, but this time I will buy the 1080.....

If you're gaming at 1080p

Get the RX480 4GB over the 8GB,

The 8GB is Nice, but the RX-480 Simply lacks the ability to use it all, any game that uses high enough resolution textures to fill that 8GB will bog down the GPU.

As for which one..

They are both Neck and Neck and within ~2-5% of each other in benchmarks, trading wins/losses, 1060 uses a smidge less power,

It's down to user Preference and Price basically,

Which software are you already familiar with, (nV or AMD)

Which one is Cheaper.

Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2),

ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9)

3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs

Thanks guy for the valuable suggestions.

Decided to go to Green because of:

1. GTX 1060 is comparatively cheaper in this part of the world. EVGA GTX 1060 6GB SC is 299€, and this runs fairly cool at high loads.

2. I am not familiar with AMD drivers. Last time I used HD 5850 from ATI times and drivers were kinda crap.

Nvidia uses proprietary technology such as CUDA and PhysX which add a lot to the performance behind those GPUs. Simply the amount of VRAM and bit memory are not clear indications.

nVidias Linux drivers are closed source and suck massively for a variety of reasons, if that is a consideration.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.
