Hi,

here is a very good read about Radar principles, different techniques and such stuff. High interesting, IMO. As example, there is (technically) described, why the F-117 had some problems with its stealth capabilities over the Kosovo.

http://www.radartutorial.eu/

I know it's a German website, but you can use Google translate and there are a lot of graphics for better understanding. The page is - of course - not made by me.

Have fun.

It's also in English and several other European languages. You just need to find the language selection button.

 Good to know.

A German article from Spiegel Online (use Google translate) from 2012, but I didn't knot that until yet.

It describes the advantage of passive Radar against stealth technology. In general, it uses the same technique as the low-band radars in the Kosovo conflict: low frequency bands.

Passive radar makes stealth useless

I found another good read, about the conflict in Yugoslavia in 1999. There are links, reports and facts about the air defense systems, anti-radiation missiles and tactics, but also counter-tactics of the Bosnians and so on.

Website (use Google translate, it's in German)

And some good tricks ...

I appreciate some interesting information being brought up, but unfortunately all this has been fairly inaccessible to English-speakers on this English board. The translations on the website from the 1st post are OK, but can you translate your latest quote better than Google does?

It has already been translated from russian, so I can't get some of it...

But here's my translation:

They used rubber mats (2cm, ~1 inch) to protect themselves againts fragmentation. There are informations off serbian websites (unconfirmed): the radar on the MiG-21 was set to the fequency of the SA-3 system (9 GHz). (I don't get the context of the next sentence, litterally it means: ) In distance within a couple of 100 to 1000 meters. (?) After several failures at the beginning the fake (SAM) site was optimized. Within 30 days 14 Anti-Radiation-missiles were fired at the dummy. Within close range of the faked SAM site (300m, ~900ft) angle reflectors were set up. This way 14 HARM were fired at the RBS P15 unsuccsesfully. For every firing unit there had to be 2 faked sites and 2 groups of angle reflectors. Maybe even microwave ovens were used as dummy targets.

It means, that these angle reflectors were set up 100 to 1000 meters from the real SAM unit.

That's an angle reflector:

taktik8.jpg

Small, but effective. It deceives the angle coordinates in the ARMs seeker, which leads to (not needed) maneuvers and can display a false target.
