Just looking for some clarification on DCSW updates. When I launch DCSW it automatically checks for updates and if one is available it downloads and I let it do its thing. Now if I go Steam, it will also show an update available and it installs it, I have been wondering if this update on Steam is the same one ? What happens if indeed they are the same, does the Steam update simply overwrite the DCSW update ? or are two files for everything created ? Are both updates necessary ?

Personally, I am not interested in the Nevada test range map update, sorry but not my cup of tea, can I prevent this installing and using up HD space ?

The steam and standalone DCS installs are totally separate from each other.

DCS modules are built up to a spec, not down to a schedule.

In order to utilize a system to your advantage, you must know how it works.

Nevada will only install into the v2.x.x, Open Alpha version. However, it is the only map currently available for that version, so without it, you can't use v2 at all.

You don't need to worry about Nevada then as this map is not free, unless you own this already.

As far as I understand Steam version is separate to DCS:W installation. Also, if you look at the default paths for installation folders, these are different so having two versions (Stand alone vs. Steam based) would mean double the space. I am not sure about updates as Steam was bit behind initially...

Out of curiosity, why would you use two versions anyway?

To be honest, iv'e had DCSW for so long now I cant remember if I got as a stand alone or through Steam but thanks for your input Gierasimov, I will look into it over the weekend and try to figure out if in fact I have two versions installed ! The fact that it is in my Steam inventory and I only have one DCSW desktop icon suggests that I only have one and got it through Steam. Also, I have not played it for years and I am very much out of touch with these issues, I just keep it up to date patiently waiting for the Spitfire and WW2 Normandy. So, I rely on the expertise of you guys on here for help in these matters. Thanks to all.

As it stands, there will be an update before the end of the year bringing DCS World up to v2.5. When that happens, you will get a major update to your installation, and it will make available all the maps - assuming you have purchased the license for them. You will not need Nevada in order to run DCS World or any of the subsequent maps.

Steam will update a couple of weeks after the stand alone version, and I believe the policy on Steam is only to implement updates when they have left the Alpha/Beta testing phases, but don't quote me on that.

So, when the Spitfire and Normandy arrive, you may find a slightly longer wait before they hit Steam, but your current set up should be perfectly OK as it'll get the necessary updates, and will continue to be current.
