Yihaaa..."She" still primes, my diva board :)

Woke up, opened RDP and awwwww YES..she is still doing 100% CPU load crunching prime at 8am

slowly this board convinces me of the power it has, still, lets just say she's a diva and thus is oh high maint. like any other good girl LoL

Voltages for RAM as stated before are high for RAM related parts...I know need to see if I can get them out of the red values and remain stability...that is all I want as end result. 3066MHz RAM by hand is better than XMP at 3000, same values btw. just a 133MHz clock made it possible.

I still learn and this 6th-gen combo is definitely harder to work than any other I had before.

..and yes...I let it prime till noon..hehe

it primed 11h without any glitch, temps max was 66-67°C on each core, which is OK and on the lower end of the ladder for 6th gen from what I have read, maybe thanks to this copper brick called Heatkiller IV that sits on top of the die ;)

Never before it did anything beyond 2600MHz RAM without errors in priming..and now it rock with 3066 like a charm

slowly slowly I work my way towards a smooth as silk system, seems like we did not like each other a lot in the beginning, I do so now I have to admit.

It is now as stable as it was unstable before. Hope it stays this way

So, after spendig another evening givin' this board it's last chance with no luck I decided at 11.45pm to RIP THAT THING APART..which I did, put it back in the box and it's gonna be in the mail today.

Already ordered the Asus Maximus Formula VIII via amazon, sadly it will come via the Netherlands and will take about till Xmas ( hope not later or we all have a :( face ) to arrive.

The Asus is again 60€ more, but I happily pay this if Asus just works as it always does, trouble free.

The MSI boards as stated in the other thread really seem to have quality issues, their return rate

is up to 3 x higher than i.e. Asus boards across the line as stated on statistic websites.

2.1% for Asus ( 3% is IT-Industry accepted failure rate across all IT devices, as a rule of thumb )

A WHOLE LOT MORE for MSI....others are in between those two extremes.

If I hadnt given my Carbide 500r to my pal next door I would still have a quiet tower to put it on,

now I need to hunt down the Chieftec DX-02B Tower somewhere so I have a Tower that deserves the name and has a 0.8mm steel and not Corsair typical 0.3 or 0.4mm ( guessed ).

I can knee over with one knee on the top of ANY chieftec tower, I did that with my now 90kg and I did it in my heavy days with 135kg...dont even try that with 75kg on the Carbide 500r..it'd crunch like an empty coke can...and imagine how your board twists and bends by just moving it around...seen it too often to accept that in my world. So I am happy I made my pal next door a gift but now have to either live with a clumpsy Chieftec BigTower Mesh anno 2008 or bite the forbidden fruit and get the DX-02B...without kitchen command knowing..ehhhhhhhh

Guys, this MSI thing was the worst PC experience in the last 10 years, only topped by my first handheld PDA from Toshiba with windows mobile that needed a reset every 2-3h to function in 2003...so bad this was and maybe still is for others.

My tip, stay away from anything that carries the name MSI...from what I have read regarding quality they suck big time.

Its colorful, it blinks and shines, the box looks awesome...and thats about it !

well....what an Odyssey :(

As it turned out, that box that came wasnt my mobo.. and even worse, amazon cancelled the order due to unavailability of the board. Looking google tells me that it is nowhere available anymore...sigh...that was my last chance for watercooling VRM's out of the box..BAHHHH

I have now ordered ( at my favourite placed, in stock and reserved..at least I hope so !! ):

Asus Maximus VIII Extreme with OC Panel and also had to change the NZXT H440v2 Tower AGAIN as it only accomodates up to ATX size, the above is EATX size...so I had to shop again for a tower...and ended up buying the same one I had, Corsair Carbide 500r, despite I mislike the thin steel and a few other shortcomings it is still a darn good layout inside, lots of fans included and wide enough to have the door 200m fan and the Poseidon 1/4" water jacks, which caused me to take the fans off the door on the Chieftecs as they were to slim for both.

Lesson learned: Dont give away your tower to a friend for free until you have your new one on the table, RUNNING !!

I dont trust anything now with this project until, delivered, running and found air worthy after a 2h Mi-8 session :)

What a ride....and still nothing to game on....BAAAHHHHH

Tower is out-of-stock, so the stuff will come after 2nd Jan. 2017. If it goes bad, it goes bad all the way.

Got the board ;)

XMP 3000 runs with 1 click

CPU goes 4.6 and stays there under load (asus feature, msi dropped to 4.2 €

No BSOD yet

Tho it is not all bright. The case is too small ( dremel needed ) despite its listed as E-ATX capable. The lower right edge needed a 2cm oval cutout to fit the board.

2nd ext usb3 plug cannot be inserted, same with all lower Sata conns, only the upper row is clear. Need to cut some more to make that work.

Win10 gave me a hard time to reactivate, activation server error, took 5 installs to allow me to connect to my hotmail to reuse/clean Win10 lics.

The board rocks, the tower is my fault. Next time round I will get a decent BIG EATX tower for sure, now i need a dremel and a flex waaahaaa

OC is a breeze, 1 click to 4.6 XMP, highest time 82c under RealBench torture run. The cooling paste may get better so 80 should be max on the future.

The ROG OC Panel II is nice but overdone. Many features and no manual LOL. TRIAL&ERROR

The fan extensionboard (2x10cm) has blank soldering spots on the back, suicidal to screw into a metal chassis without precaution. Asus should change this ala add an isolating rubber foam sticky tape to the back, that'd be great.

Volts are WAY WAY WAY lower than on MSI M9, not 1 is red even at 4.6

All in all, well done Asus

Ola...She goes 4.8 without errors and stable with numerous RealBench runs and all others but prime95 small-FTT's, which I excluded from stability tests for now.

The RAM hovers a notch below 1.35V @ around 1.33xV so there is some air left to OC the RAM,

once I found the sweetspot.

4.9 is doable, it passed Passmark but crashed on RealBench on a quick try.

Will have to see if I can get 4.9 or even 5.0 running. That would be great as I would still settle at 4.8, a notch below Max-OC.

Volts @ 4.8 are 1.4x-1.51x, going up& down as needed. The CPU stays rocksolid at the dialed in Turbo of x48. The MSI board was not capable of sustaining this high Turbo clock.

Well done Asus, superior Bios, Management chips and obviously PERFORMANCE ;)

Start to love the OC Panel II on my desk....precise Voltages and access to most MB functions without opening the case.

The board has extensive software, most is usefull but again, cFos' GameFirst in Asus branding is still a stupid idea. Just dont touch it. Cant work with IPv6, wont run reliably, cant minimize properly and of questionable worth. Better know your Router and set those settings in the device where such settings make sense.

What makes me happy is the Intel 219-chip for Gigabit, a proper chip for rocksolid connections, will team it to 2Gbit with my Intel Gbit Pro-1000 PCIe card so I can talk to my server 2Gbit FD both. Half the SSD speed and full speed for the HDD's in use, they roughly push 212MB/sec.

Currently chewing through all the Game downloads...like 100+GB for all. I am happy to have a 25Mbit line...what would one do with 768Kbit DSL line ???

Sleepmode, Hibernate, Reboot, Cold On/Off...not a single glitch with this Asus board ;)

MSI GO HOME !!!! that was the biggest mistake of 2016

Had a quick PikesPeak run in my Audi Quattro Sport in DiRT Rally. zoom zoom :)

After almost 2 month downtime Bit is utmost HAPPY AGAIN :)

Weekend will be my Mi-8 weekend...just flying and enjoying DCS and this new rig.

BTW... I opened my Heatkiller IV waterblock and cleaned it....despite the water with citric acid added was still crystal clear and not smelly etc... I had enough copper-oxyd at the fins entrance gate to block enough water to have lower temps now with cleaned and brushed internal guiding fins. Took 10min to do it and well worth it.

I know ask myself: "HOW could I possibly clean the inside of my 980GTX-Poseidon waterblock ?"

Taking that thing apart is a different story. Next time round I will get a founders edition 1080Ti and attach a watercool.de waterblock which I can service easily.

A thing I didnt think of when buying this card. Positive is the non-voided warranty, bad thing is you almost wont be able to clean the block from the inside. Which one argument weighs more is yet to be determined.

Heck..I love those elegant LED's it's got. Looks can be great if the performance is great.

Nice LED's and BSOD's dont go well together in my world.

Apropos BSOD...soon it will be GSOD ...MS made it GREEEEEEN ;)

Citric acid is a great preservative. It is used in restaurant supply to keep liquid eggs fresh.

This built is haunted !!!!

Board refuses to boot with Qcode 00.

It may be that the CPU is bad, DOA or fried.

The mobo in addition killed its nice Intel I219 LOM's firmware.

Flashing bootutil wont work, Asus rep said RMA it ( 3rd board in 6 weeks to RMA waahaa ).

That thing flew so great, Nttr was awesome, Caucasus too... For ONE evening. Next morning 00 code ;(

Sending board to asus and upon return i will see if the CPU still causes 00 and red cpu-led.

If that is true and the 6700k is dead it was bad from day 1 on and maybe a reason why the msi board went nuts.

If true I will contact Intel for RMA DIRECTLY and if they refuse I may get a 7700k if Asus confirms that the M8E board gets a Bios upgrade to work with 7th gen chips.

It "ran" perfect at speeds in sig and IPC was 2840 in passmark, max Volt 1.5150V. Way too low to burn it imho.

Will keep you updated

So,

after a relaxing sunday with the kids I decided that I will RMA just everything. The board and the CPU and see what happens.

I just filled out the Intel papers for RMA and wait for their response.

Asus has already committed to RMA my board due to the faulty PXE ROM on the Intel NIC.

Darn, it performed so nice in the few hours that I could fly with it.

If Intel wont RMA the CPU I have to accept it as I overclocked it. Despite the Voltages on the CPU vCore were never that high or anywhere close to critical, the Volts for the DRAM controller was raised to the REDs with the MSI board, which makes me think there is a chance that the MSI biard fried my CPU in default settings over 4 weeks time. Not unlikely tbh.

All in all, it will be hard to hold anybody responsible and I can call myself happy that Asus takes the board back due to obvious malfunctions that have nothing to do with my Qcode 00 problem ( at least I think so LoL ).

Intel... I dunno....will be interesting to see what they do, the other guy on ROG forum got his replaced with a story 95% the same as my story, so I have some hope but are very grounded when it comes to RMA a OC-CPU...usually you have Sub-Zero chances for replacement.

and..if that is true and Asus techie tells me I will get a Bios Update for 7th gen I will shoot for a 7700k this time. No doubt ! Not that 6th gen again if I have to pay again. Got the Z170 tho so I have to make sure my board gets a Bios soon that allows 7th gen CPU to be used.

When I take the board out I will also work the tower so I can use all SATA conns and the 2nd USB3 header...need a Flex or BIG Dremel to do that...LOL.

Intel responded ( still far less than 24h ) and asked me to confirm my shipping address for DHL services ( german parcel service ).

SOUNDS GREAT !!!

Asus told me to go thru my dealer, which is not the easy way.

Next time round, I ONLY buy Asus WS boards as they get a TOTALLY DIFFERENT service channel

with pre-exchange and technicians calling you back in need.

Unfortunately, with this "consumer" board ( that was more money than my WS board ) I dont get such service but must either fight my way thru their website ( doing just now ) or call up Mindfactory.

Intel makes me happy now :) I honestly hope this works out !

You are 100% right !!!

I even got that mobo/cpu for free back then, you cant beat a free Sandy that goes 4.8-5GHz

without much hassle.

As it looks, I will get the same spec CPU back from Intel, would love to get a 7700k for all the hassle I had with it.

It could well be that 1 of the 2 bad devices ( MSI & Intel ) killed the other(s). It might very well be that the Intel PXE ROM broken is a result of the CPU chip cutting out...but whom can you make this believe ?? No one !

It will remain unsolved what caused it and I can live with that. I am just happy that every company involved made the things necessary to please the paying part, me.

Long story short, if this rig with new mobo and new CPU still makes me mad I am gonna give it away or break in into pieces, that much I am fed up with this BS going for more than 6 weeks now.

My next board will be a STANDARD 120€ board for gaming or an Asus WorkStation board but no more GAMERS board, hell no. Those seem to be doomed and overdone. LEDs over stability is a bad approach to have satisfied customers is my result of this endavour.

I sill have this Asus WS Board here with an i7-920.

No LEDs but rock solid, just the DCS copy protection system with limited deactivations holds me back to use it for DCS, what a pitty.

ED should move and get the CS so we can live with it. I have burned a handful of activations with this hassle. Doesnt amuse me tbh, it sets me up that I could throw this whole rig out of the window from 2nd floor, honestly.

Go and buy a Mac, they show you how things work and activations work properly so you are not limited. Go AppStore, buy and use it...on 5 Mac's. No activation stress, no untold limits ( deactivations ) just USER FRIENDLY and not only COMPANY FRIENDLY like this CS is.

They forgot US in the equation of CS is my personal opinion.

I have been running my rig with Ivy Bridge CPU for just over 3 years now, rock solid at 4.50 GHZ without a single burp along the way. The only thing I have upgraded is my GPU and Windows versions.

Reading threads like this make me even more convinced I don't need to be in any rush to upgrade my MB.

Hope it all works out for you soon.
