Force_Feedback Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Found this awesome video, man, this is almost as good as Tigrou's vids, except it has tanks, and real world footage, so it should get you in the mood for Black Shark. Of, if you start drooling from playing operation flashpoint, this too is a great vid (to prepare you for ArmA). Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
GGTharos Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Hehe, nice. Featureing some T-72/80's, LEO 2A5+, CV9040 as well as air defense and mortar versions of CV90, and Steel Beasts Pro 1 :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Kula66 Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Do the Russians/Soviets really advance in tightly packed ranks like that ... easy target for art/CBUs/MLRS.
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 If that's where the Iraqi military learned its armor tactics in 1991, then, yep, I guess that's how they advance. A formation like that may look "scary" but its completely worthless. There is no mutual support, scan zones look like they'd be little more than random, and fratricide would be a HUGE problem advancing in a line like that. Its like pheasant hunting in a close, straight line...somebody's gonna die. Oh, and yes, it also makes them an easier target, expecially for CBU's, GBU's, as well as PGU's from the good ol' GAU-8. Tactical errors aside...nice vid, Force. :D
GGTharos Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Actually it is a good way to mass firepower. If the other guy has 4 tanks and you come over the ridge like this, sure, he might take 4 of yours, but what does he do after that? Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 At 1 round every 3 seconds, you'd better be darn close, otherwise those 4 M1A2s will make a mess of your line. ;)
GGTharos Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Ahem ... every 6-8 seconds ... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Only from a junior loader. The more-proficient loaders were right around 3 seconds. :)
Maverick-90 Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 only for a few shots, after that even those geht slower ;)
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 True, after several minutes. Fortunately for the dummy who crests a ridge in that idiotic formation, the dying on his side slows down after about 10 minutes from cresting the ridge. Hmmm...worst case scenario...a round every 6 to 8 seconds from 4 of a tank that is combat-proven not to miss (on the move...against a moving target)...well...you do the math on that one. To be realistic, consider 20 rounds per minute, for at least 5 minutes, from at least one of them. That's 100 enemy tanks, killed by a single M1A2, so mutiply that by 1.5 to consider a green crew in the other 3. Do you like those odds? I sure wouldn't. ;)
GGTharos Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 That is an unrealistically optimistic assessment ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Of course it is. No tank batallion is going to be as stupid as the one shown in the video, especially not the Republican Guard. They still suffered heavy losses though, against a numerically inferior force at phase line 73 Easting, in spite of the fact that many of them were dug-in in prepared positions.
GGTharos Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Are you sure? 73 easting didn't have a whole lot of terrain, Fulda Gap is another story ... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
warthogmadman987 Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Hey guys, im no friggin tactician:book: , but i could geuss if everyone dicided to follow eachother in a line and were getting shot at by some abram's when going over the crest of the hill wouldnt it get pretty cluttered? just a guess:music_whistling: :megalol:
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Actually it did, a wadi...but there weren't any trees like there are at the Fulda gap. :) Line formation is still not all that valid, in either case, unless the exact positions of your enemy are known.
GGTharos Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Erm ... line formation is the standard assault fomation ... And we're talking line, not trail. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
ARM505 Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 The vid shows OFP with a mod BTW, showing the Strv122 (as the new patch for SB Pro PE does too) In the vid, the Russian line advance looks like one of their typical propaganda clips to me. I can hardly imagine them doing that against a dug in top of the line platoon of MBT's, or when facing a modern air threat.

M1A2 do 16 shots in row from right side of turret stowage and then going to search turret-down position (and stop) to reload shots from left side of turret to right side of turret, same for 8 shots stowed in hull. and you can't do that on-move. and no "3-sec-in-row". 2 shots maximum, then going down to 6-7-8sec delays, depends on conditions. it's not about "russian-american" tanks discussion, just my '02c from technicals data.
