I really think that DCS F-5 is not properly modeled in scaling, I have seen IRL F-5 here in Mexico with all the details flying 3-4 miles away, in DCS you will see only a pixel until they are at 1.2km from you, and is the moment that the aircraft becomes from a pixel with a smoke trail into a visible shape. IMHO

Watch the video in 1080p (minute 2:50), and the distance to the target in the ASP meter below the HUD, it sucks!, thats why the F-5 pilots in DCS use their eyes to find the enemies easily with the radar turned off

I know it must have been discussed a zillion times, but I came late to the party.

I've flown F5E-s on the ACG cold war server, and have a kill ratio of about 50:1. I felt virtually untouchable. I went out hugging the ground, spotted some 21-s, shot them down without them suspecting anything, and even if they tried to evade I stayed glued to them. Real fighter jock's dream.

That is, until I bought the 21. I love this plane. Amazing FM and everything. But it's damn near useless online, at least with me at the controls.

1) I can't speak Russian, so the AWACS is not really helpful

2) if I fly high, it's still hard to find bogeys, and the RWR is non existent basically. And totally not helpful against AIM-9s.

3) so I go low down, hugging the ground, but the 21 is a lot more visible than the F5, so usually I explode from one second to the other. Visibility from the 21 is horrible compared to the F5.

4) even if I spot an F5, he is on my tail in a second, and I cannot shake him off.

So now I have a kill ration of 1:50.

How do you guys do it?!

Thanks in advance!

had a hard time on the cold war server today, spotting in the rift is just too hard.

Also the AWACS is useless, had visual on a burner call AWACS and they report clean so I peel off and low and behold its a bloody F-5.

agreed, spotting is practically useless unless you fly right into them. I don't get much help with the AWACS. Ground Control, needing your help! :)

Im really not sure on what can be done, other than ED improving the rendering of the aircraft. There is no way I wouldn't be able to spot an aircraft 2-3 miles away IRL.

Also the AWACS is shoddy, seems to be just when you need that bogey dope they don't reply, give merged calls when there is nothing near you and report clean when your surrounded!

There is a focus on improving the spotting. a couple threads about it, (Sith mentioned something on it). Hopefully by the next map release, etc. fingers crossed.

There is plenty of 'way' ... in fact it happened to a bunch of real military pilots, to the point where a MiG-21 right in front of an F-4 would 'dissapear' from the pilot's eyes at tail-on aspects with 2nm range in a tail-chase, and that's an aircraft that the guy already knows is there, and he's staring at it ... it's not a search for attempting to spot anything.

Real studies corroborate the same. A simulator can't faithfully reproduce this for probably obvious reasons, but they should try to get as close as possible to this.

this guy should answer all of your questions.

I highly recommend you spend some time getting to watch ALL of his videos.

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.
