I just checked.

In DCSW 1.5 '..\Saved Games\DCS\fxo\' contains 14 files.

In DCSW beta '..\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\fxo\' contains 11 files.

And in DCSW alpha '..\Saved Games\DCS.openalpha\fxo\' contains 295(!!) files.'

I'm only flying with an Oculus CV1, but I'm running the ME without VR, so I'm often changing back and forth between those. Additionally, I'm still playing around with graphics settings a lot.

I'm wondering if I might be screwing up the fxo folder by switching between VR and non-VR, and with all the graphics settings I'm often changing.

Is this normal, to have 295 files in fxo?

Does anybody know this?

alot of them are likely old, You can delete the folder and they will re-compile.

2.0 Alpha has Gone through several changes, and w/ Deferred/PBR Being Added has several more shaders compiled than 1.5.

Hi SZ, thanks for your answer.

What I'm really trying to get at is, how often do I need to remove the old fxo files and let new ones be generated?

I could delete both of them before each time I start DCS. The question I'm trying to find an answer to is, when should I delete them?

Rebuilding the shaders is what takes DCS so long after an update. So ... maybe you want not to do this manually too often.

Especially as it seems that DCS automatically detects if a shader needs to be re-compiled. Maybe you will accumulate old, unused shaders, but besides wasting a few KB of disk space, I would rather trust DCS to do a decent job there.

I am fairly sure the general idea is to delete both those folders following an update - such as 2.0 - 2.1.

Deleting every time you start DCS etc is not really necessary as nothing has changed regarding shaders etc since last time you ran DCS.

As I mentioned I just deleted the fxo folder to see what happened (I deleted after 2.0 to 2.1) and it rebuilt exactly the same number of files - so no change.
