I quite like the idea of complete open water (hopefully without land borders like Normandy -so technically endless) provided of course we get an underwater w/ sea bed (which the 2.5 Caucasus and I think Normandy both have). For open ocean conflict with surface action groups and submarines, using ship based aircraft.

The reason why I would prefer islands (but hey why not both?) is so we can do amphibious assaults (once we have the assets and the game mechanics to support them) and to have coastal defence/land based aircraft and greater variety in one theatre - that's why I proposed a GIUK gap map with Iceland, the Faroe islands and the Shetland Islands as land masses - the total land area (of which most of it is Iceland) is 3.5x less than NTTR whilst still having enough area on all 3 landmasses to get some use out of them. But I agree, this should come after a complete open ocean map as it will take longer to procure.

Falklands would be a dream come true for me, but to get the complete thing you'd have to do Argentina (at the very least the east coast) as that's predominantly where their aircraft took off from. And then there's Ascension island - the base for UK long-range operations. In short you'd have an exceptionally large map, with much more landmass that is more likely not feasible - because of the sheer size of the landmass.

Was just thinking. If a sea map is possible, then how about the sea area around Ascension Island.

Ascension is just 34sq miles, so pretty damn small. The nearest coastline is 1000 miles away. Limiting the island size would hopefully mean that the development costs would be negligible. Along the way it provides a single airstrip, but capable of hosting any aircraft that we have in game.

As such, gives a genuine runway for most normal aircraft, then a HUGE expanse of sea for carriers and ships. As game performance seems to be impacted by ground clutter, having virtually none would hopefully allow for a MUCH larger than normal map. I'm hoping for a square roughly 2000*2000 miles, plenty of room for manoeuvre for fleet actions, something that is just not really possible with the maps that we have.

I've seen this idea kicking around for ages and it kills me how restrictive map making is for DCS. Surely this is a good question for Eagle Dynamics. I've heard all the "well we haven't finished our SDK yet" and "Apply for a 3rd party license, along with your credentials in texturing and mapmaking skills" stock answers, but why haven't we seen anything since LuckyBob had Nevada going in 1.1.1.1 alpha 3? What gives? Tell us something that isn't maskirovka, please. Why do we have to have a license, we can tinker with th elua and edm's and all sorts, but mapmaking? Will this ever be something the public can do, or is it locked behind DLC forever, because that's the underlying subtext of all the responses I have ever heard?

There's a lot of water in the 'Black Sea' !!!

There is, but it's not 2000*2000 miles, which would be awesome for fleet engagements.
