New build - Massive update from Alienware Aurora R4

Recommended Posts

G'day all. Just finished my new build. What a difference from my R4 that was about 5 years old.

Been testing the last couple days and wow! In 1.5.7 getting between 90-120 FPS on the ground and 120-180 FPS in the air! In 2.1 getting between 80 on the ground and 150 FPS in the air, depending on aircraft. Never drops below 80 going low level and fast through Vegas! Options are all high except visibility is ultra but have AA and AF going through nVidia control panel instead of in game.

I wanted to future proof this build and think I've succeeded. No stutter, lag and loading times from the SSD (1tb Mushkin) is just a few seconds. Can't wait for my rift to arrive on Monday!

I'm so attached to my lovely Aurora R4, I'm scared to change it...

I doesn't use VR, at 1080p res it still play with decent FPS, maybe I can avoid updating components for next 2-3 years

I was the same. I only bought one a few years ago because I always wanted THE Alienware.. And the price was decent. But after having to limit my visuals and getting about 25 FPS in Vegas max (AMD HD 7950) and wanting to try VR, I bit the bullet and built a new one. All told, minus VR, I spent only $2500ish for the new build (R4 was almost $3000 at the time) and it took me two days to get it up and running. Selling my R4 to help offset the cost too..

It's worth the move to current gen specs IMHO, not just for DCS

For DCS, at least, I would not count on getting by with only 8GB of RAM for the next two years. If your video card has less than 8GB of VRAM, I wouldn't count on that either.

I don't use anymore FPS counters(they cause performance anxiety:megalol:), but I have smooth play using limited graphics settings;)

My point is that the performance you have now is far more likely to degrade than to improve in the next few years.

I don't remember where, but I had read that the 2.1 branch still isn't optimized... so, performance should increase with 2.5, not degrade (hopefully?)
