britgliderpilot Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Wait, not just air cooling . . . . a completely stock Intel-supplied heatsink and fan. Read all about it here: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2802&p=1 I just bought an E6400, and while I knew it was overclockable I didn't know it was THAT overclockable! This could be fun . . . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg
Ukr_Alex Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I did that with a E6300 ;) I had the stock intel cooler at first but then I went with an Arctic Cooling 7. britgliderpilot Posted January 2, 2007 Author Posted January 2, 2007 Mine went to 2.66GHz with a single BIOS change last night. Hee. So that's £150 in the bank straight away . . . . grin. Of course, it didn't actually manage to load CS:Source for a quick test, although oddly enough it survived the stress test . . . . but anyway ;) That was Super Pi in 23 seconds, IIRC. But only from average 165 to average 173 in the Source stress test. Should really try it on Lomac when I get a minute . . . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg

I tried overclocking my e6600 over the weekend, and only got to 2.6Gz before I was getting CPU temps of 60C!! veit Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Yeah, the Amd Opteron 165 is similarly crazy. I overclocked it from a stock 1.6 GHz to about 2.9 GHz, completely stable under superpi and only with stock fan/heatsink.

VMFA-Blaze Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Those Intels must run hot. I've got my FX57 oc'd to 3.1ghz and it's aircooled with a Thermalright XP90c heatsink. Hottest it's ever gotten under load in the summer was 54 C. I've just finished a new build, intel e6600 with a Zalman CNPS9500 LED... Its been running at an almost constant 39c to 40c... and it's a lot quieter then the last one, AMD 3200 with a stock fan ... I actually got this because I was have some freeze ups with FSX ... And I wasn't sure if the AMD would handle LOBS... I went all the way out this time and got everything new including the key board and mouse, which I actually just picked up 2 days ago, the Logitech DNovo Laser ... Any way the list is so long it would bore the heck you of you guy's .. Another thing that I like is the case, its an Asus 360 in red... Anyway I'll post some new pics in a few days and give everyone the lowdown of all of the parts... ~S~ Blaze intel Cor i7-6700K ASUS ROG MAX VIII Extreme G.Skill TridentZ Series 32 GB Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SATA II ASUS GTX 1080/DIRECTX 12 Windows 10 PRO Thrustmaster Warthog Oculus Rift VR

britgliderpilot Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 Mine's now happy at 2.66GHz. It'll boot at 2.8GHz with the Vcore high enough, but according to the ABIT software it's both under-reading compared to the BIOS, and wobbling significantly. And won't Possibly due to my, um, interim PSU . . . . will delay efforts to reach higher speeds for now, then. Works very nicely at 2.66GHz, though. A lightly OC'd E6600 - dare I say it - might finally be enough to take on Lomac and win? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg

Those temps are at stock speed, but I'm using an Arctic Freezer Pro 7. I think the airflow in my case is not so good, so going to buy a couple more fans, see how it turns out. I just installed an 8800GTS and apparently they really up the temps in the case! "Unholy Roller" [sIGPIC]http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/images/userbars/A-10C_UserBar_01.gif[/sIGPIC]

Airflow inside the case is vital. I have a more or less big case, all teh wires tucked away with 1 intake fan and two exhast fans. The intake fan is level with the freezer pro aswel, and so are the exhaust fans. So I have a clean in-through-and out air flow system. The intake is just above that black HDD http://www.is-mad.com/upload/userfiles/SFDMALEX/Rig_AC_cooled.jpg :Core2Duo @ 435FSB x 7 3.05GHz : ATI x1900xtx: 2GB Patriot @ 435Mhz : WD 250Gb UATA: Seagate 320Gb SATA2: X-Fi Platinum:

I just purchased an 8800 GTS, so I haven't actually tried it out yet but from what I've been reading, Nvidia added that huge cooling system because of major heat issues... I have a Zalman 3500 running on the cpu which has kept the temps. at decent levels, but I really don't like making deductions about hardware unless of course I try it out personally... I built the system last week using a 7900 GTS/GTO. Since then I've decided against the 7900 and RMA'd it. I did this for the same reasons that I dumped my 6600 in favor of a 6800 Ultra on my last system.. And I mean Direct X 10 is knocking on our door .. Actually it would have been better to go with a 8800 GTX but the price is just to high right now..Anyway I can always add another GTS a little later on and use SLI... This should bring up the performance even higher.. But with these new cards I'm certainly going to have to up the cooling power by modding the case fans.. This will be after I begin testing the new card.. I'm not even going to attempt to OC until the system becomes very stable.. and has a chance to burn in properly.. ~S~ Blaze intel Cor i7-6700K ASUS ROG MAX VIII Extreme G.Skill TridentZ Series 32 GB Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SATA II ASUS GTX 1080/DIRECTX 12 Windows 10 PRO Thrustmaster Warthog Oculus Rift VR
thereminqblank Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Well I just ordered this drive bay fan: http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/008/sckb1000_detail.html Hopefully it will make a bit of a difference. I have a Thermaltake Tsunami case and even though there is a big intake fan, it's all the way at the bottom and I don't think very much cool air is getting the CPU. Just hot air from the 8800 and 680i northbridge heatsink! :D I'll post here the results of installing this fan, just in case the info is useful to anyone! Blaze: The 8800 GTS is definitely very nice! But, and this is just my opinion, I'm wouldn't worry about SLI. I installed two 7800GTs just over 12 months ago and I think it's probably better to save the money and upgrade the card every 9-12 months (should you feel inclined to!). Like I said, it's only been just over 12 months before the 8800GTS came out and it spanks the ass of both those 7800GTs! VMFA-Blaze Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I have the Tsunami case as well... :smilewink: I used it when I built my last system, and I really liked the fan set there .. Actually its better then my present case, ASUS Vento 3600... This is my new case, its very stylish, don't you think, but the fans aren't as good as the last one.. I think I'm going to try that fan setup that you suggested.. ~S~ Blaze intel Cor i7-6700K ASUS ROG MAX VIII Extreme G.Skill TridentZ Series 32 GB Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SATA II ASUS GTX 1080/DIRECTX 12 Windows 10 PRO Thrustmaster Warthog Oculus Rift VR
VMFA-Blaze Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 PS. I should get the 8800 on Monday, I checked the tracking no. and it's out for delivery... thereminqblank Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 That is a nice looking case you got there :) The Tsunami is excellent. Think I might got the Thermaltake Armour full tower next time hehe I would appreciate your opinion on the 8800 GTS and its effect on Lock On. I think I'm having some weird issues (nothing too bad) and would like to see if you have the same thing. I agree with ruggbutt on the drivers, but hopefully that will be fixed soon... I took off the side of my case as an experiment, and it dropped the CPU temps by 7-10 degrees! hopefully this Scythe fan will have a similar effect. Then I can start overclocking :pilotfly: "Unholy Roller" [sIGPIC]http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/images/userbars/A-10C_UserBar_01.gif[/sIGPIC]
Fjordmonkey Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 In the coming months, I'll invest in a Noctua NH-U12F for my E6300, and then do some serious overclocking. Already have two 12cm Noctua-fans in my case, with a third 12cm fan pulling air in through the sidepanel. Also thinking about modding the front of my Centurion 534-case to fit another 12cm in the two free 5 1/4 inch wells I have, just to add to the airflow going through (the airflow through the botton front 12cm fan isn't good enough, in my opinion, thus the mod). Current hardware-setup is: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 mainboard Crucial DDR2 PC5300 1024mb CL5 RAM (looking at upgrading to a faster type) Intel C2D E6300 1.86ghz CPU (Stock cooler for now) Powercolor Radeon X1950Pro 256mb GDDR3 Vidcard CoolerMaster Centurion 534 Silver/Black (might swap this one out for an Antec Performance One P180 instead) Regards Fjordmonkey Clustermunitions is just another way of saying that you don't like someone. I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.
thereminqblank Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I said I would post results of installing the Scythe-Kama bay cooler, so here it is: First of all, it's a pain to install in a Thermaltake Tsunami case, or probably any case that uses those slide in pins to hold drives in the drive bay. In other words, the cooled needs to be screwed into the drive bay frames. I had to bend the cooler 'brackets' and luckly there are a holes on either side of the drive bays, which the brackets can be screwed into, with a little bit of creative bending. I have seen a drop in idle temps since installing the cooler, of around 5-8 degrees (from between 45-48 to around 40-43. It's not an amazing result, but I guess it will give a little more room for overclocking.. As a side not, I also installed an Akasa exhaust blower, that fits into one of the PCI case slots. I put it just under the 8800 GTS, and the temp for the GPU has dropped around 6 degrees. That may have contributed to the drop in the CPU temps aswell. Kuky Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I am using E6600 and have it overclocked to 3GHz, just by raising the FSB. I have all voltage settings in BIOS set to AUTO by the way. I am using ZALMAN CNPS9500AT heatsink and I'm very satisfied with my currect setup (part of which is also X1950XTX, Audigy and 2GB of Corsair PC5400 DDR2 RAM with 4-4-4-12 timings). I think these Core 2 Duos are really worth the money... not to mention they are very nicely overclockable. Pilotasso Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Dont you have to have realy realy good mem modules? arent they expensive enough to defeat the whole purpose of overclocking to save $$$? .
