I'm currently using and older 24" monitor and since upgrading my rig to a 1080Ti FTW it's now time to consider going to a much larger monitor and perhaps 4K.

I have seen most folks go to an intermediate step at 1440p which even at 27" and even 32" looks really nice. Not to mention Gsync and 144 refresh rates. That said I'm concerned moving to full 4K at even 32" It would make things pretty tiny. It's hard enough to pick up targets now even though they've added some scaling.

Anyone have some advice? I'm also looking into HDR tech which is out as well

I fly both sims and I play shooters

Thoughts?

3570K OC 4.5 on water (I will go to a new CPU once the word is out on next gen and if we will get scale with more cores)

Things don't get pretty tiny on 4K. There are just more pixels to show the objects. So if you fly with a 27" monitor then everything is the same size on a 4k 27" monitor. You will of cause have to tell DCSW that you run on a different resolution otherwise things will get small.

I run with this one (https://www.philips.com.au/c-p/BDM4350UC_75/brilliance-4k-ultra-hd-lcd-display) and are very happy with the switch from a 40" full HD

Ps. the screen shot is done from Full HD so you may not be able to see the resolution difference. This is just for object size comparrision

I have both a 34" ultrawide and a 24" 4K monitor. My advice is that for gaming, 4K is not worth it, and you're better served with technologies such as ultrawide, high refresh rate, etc. Although the difference in pixel density is very noticeable if you compare them side by side, you quickly forget about it in actual gameplay. As for target spotting, it's gonna be easier to spot them on lower resolutions than higher because of how DCS treats far-away targets as single black pixels. Also be aware that HDR10 monitors require game support, and the current list of supported games is pretty short (at the bottom of the article): http://www.pcgamer.com/what-hdr-means-for-pc-gaming/

Objects won't be smaller, they'll just be more clearly defined.

I had a 27'' 4k, a 27'' 1440p, and now run 3x 1080p monitors. The step from 4k to 1440 was noticeable, from that to 1080 even more noticeable, it's much harder to read gauges zoomed out now.

If you're wondering why I'm going down, not up, it's because the 4kp60 monitor died, and I went to 1440p144 because I was struggling to run at 4k... then IT died, and now I have built a cockpit and run the triple 1080p60s because I think 3x4k or 1440 MIGHT be asking a lot of my 980ti =p

I'll upgrade when the next gen comes out. 4k will be easy, and triple high res monitors will be easy and affordable.

I currently use a 4k tv as a monitor. I have VR too so I don't use the monitor much but when I do, DCS looks great at 4k on a 50" screen. I haven't noticed a discernible difference in spotting, despite a lot of people saying it will be worse. I leave MSAA and AA off. I used to have a triple screen 24" setup, and I much prefer the larger single 4k monitor to 3 screens. Plus dcs runs better with a single screen.

The spotting on 4K is worse. Not terribly worse, but still worse. MSAA/AA off.

So I guess if you want to go 4K then you do need a much larger monitor. I just don't know where the cross over happens going from 1080p to 4k and my aging 24" monitor.

I haven't had the opportunity to compare with other tech such as ultrawide, 4k but if you like night flying I'd recommend you try and get a look at a VA monitor. The blacks are so deep that things like lights, stars, etc. really pop compared to IPS, where the night is more of a murky grey.
