Just beneath the side cockpit panels, between the pitot tubes and the mirror mounts, there are what appear to be large plates:

It does not appear in many real-world Mi-8's, it seems:

While the latest variants have something that looks like it might be the same thing functionally, but with perhaps a different geometry and placement:

What is it? What is it's purpose? Armor of some kind?

It's the additional armour plating for the cockpit.

 

If you place an Mi-8 in the mission editor, you have the option to remove or add the armour plating. It's in the same place as the options to enable/disable the IR filters and the clamshell doors.

Except if your the Engineer in the Mi8, notice how much plating is in front of that seat. :music_whistling:
