Hi,

Hoping for some clarify on a point.

There was mention that DCS will every 4 days go and talk to it's central server to verify that a licensed product can be used.

What would happen in the following 2 potential scenarios:

1. You go work in a different location temporarily and wish to play DCS on a laptop. There's no available internet and you're there for 2 months

2. Eagle Dynamics go bankrupt and close your servers (clearly we hope not, but it's possible).

In the above scenarios, would we be stopped by client from using our DLCs (aircraft, terrain and campaigns)?

7800x3d, 5080, 64GB, PCIE5 SSD - Oculus Pro - Moza (AB9), Virpil (Alpha, CM3, CM1 and CM2), WW (TOP and CP), TM (MFDs, Pendular Rudder), Tek Creations (F18 panel), Total Controls (Apache MFD), Jetseat

In the second, ED can make many sorts of arrangement to allow the software to run without DCS existing. However, I doubt they are legally obligated to do so, once they no longer exist as a company.

For example, if Sirius XM went out of business that would make your satellite radio useless and they would have no obligation to compensate you or do anything to keep your radio functional.

Correct, if the company is going swirly the software engineers will be updating

their CV's and filling in job applications, not writing a patch to remove the DRM

....not writing a patch to remove the DRM

ED have confirmed in the past that that is exactly what they would do should they go out of business.

Good intentions only go so far.

I really wonder how such an event would play out in the real world.

Here is your two week notice that we are shutting the doors. We need you to code a non-DRM version of the product.

Hmmm, I am gone in two weeks, do I care what my boss wants?

Yes, the answer is a matter of intergrity. Personally, I would be one of those who would spend my two weeks coding the desired product during the day and spending my off time on my CV and seeking a new employer. An interesting side note is that in this type of environment people who are let go are generally, and immediately, isolated from any possibility of doing harm to corporate software/hardware.

Twenty years, or so, ago, I was laid off from an IT position. My access to the computers was removed before I left the HR office and I was escorted while I cleared my belongings from my office. My potential ability to cause harm, had I the desire to do so, was a far greater concern than my ability to contribute prior to my scheduled departure from the payroll. Granted, the company was a DOD contractor which may have played a role in the level of paranoia involved.

Of course - it’s a matter of faith I suppose, believing what we are told. In case someone does not take my word for it, which is again eminently reasonable, herewith a post in confirmation of DRM-lifting from a few years past:

Agreed. Some things must be taken on faith.

Plus, I have always respected EB so I won't dispute something that he had reason to believe would be the case.
