Neil Gardner Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Back in the midst of time when I was a young soldier - a very young soldier, you guys may remember that the UK was involved in a spat with the Argentinians over ownership of the Falkland Islands - nasty business and now long over and we’re all old men. But what I wondered was: if the RAF were using Harrier GR1- which I think they were - and the FAA (the Navy) were using Sea Harriers, does anyone remember what the Argentinians were using? I’ve got a feeling it was A5’s but I don’t really remember. I ask because it has often been considered that this was one of the major combat test cases for Harrier and it emerged very much the victor. I don’t ask for any flag waving reasons - War is a nightmare and families lose loved ones on all sides. I’m asking out of historical interest and because now I have this wonderful RAZBAM model of the American development. - the AV. 1
epoch Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentine_air_forces_in_the_Falklands_War More kit than I was expecting to read about!
drPhibes Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 A-4s, Mirage 3/IAI Kfir, Super Etandard and probably some other ones that I have forgotten edit: sniped by epoch.
Neil Gardner Posted December 4, 2017 Author Posted December 4, 2017 Good sources, thanks. Yes, should have mentioned that we came to consider that the Argentine military in the air fought with huge courage and skill as for various reasons their aircraft were not in good condition, but they still did us allot if damage. I have a friend who was on the Sir Galahad, hit by a missile from a Mirage (it was an excorcet so must have been a Mirage ?), and suffers from PTS to this day.
epoch Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Pretty sure the Super Etandard carried the Exocet. The Argentines didn't have many of them as they hadn't all been delivered/integrated with their aircraft systems.
Esac_mirmidon Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 5 Etandard and 5 Exocets. If the Argentinians would had more Exocets who knows the final result. " You must think in russian.." NeilWillis Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 It's also worth bearing in mind that the Argentine air forces were operating at the extreme edge of their range. It was a near run thing, and could easily have ended in disaster for the Royal Navy. The aircraft losses sustained by the UK were all lost to ground fire. The air war was very one sided.
robmlufc Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Worth remembering that the carrier Veinticinco de Mayo spent most of the conflict hiding in port, after the General Belgrano was sunk. The conflict may well have been fought differently if that was not the case.
Lordzarj Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 A-4s, Mirage 3/IAI Kfir, Super Etandard and probably some other ones that I have forgotten edit: sniped by epoch. IAI Nesher rather than Kfir (it’s predecessor) called Dagger in Argentine service.
ESAc_matador Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 5 Etandard and 5 Exocets. If the Argentinians would had more Exocets who knows the final result. We all know.... i guess..
