guys, I want to soon get an ssd for dcs,

I cant afford one the wakes me up and makes me tea as well, :)

so whats the minimum size and requirements, I'm a bit confused with all the different types of read speeds etc, so what regions should I look for.

I also want it to be external in a box over usb, as internal not an option.

lastly...phew! can I transfer my install from the hdd to the ssd ok?

thanks for your help its much apreciated

Why can't you put on SATA buss?

It would be most beneficial on the SATA or even PCIe buss, however for DCS 128GB to 256GB should be both usable and affordable.

well at present I use a gaming laptop, I know I know, but I still get 55 up fps and a lot of settings are on high so it runs absolutely fine, but I want to cut down on load times and the occasional stutter. and itl free up hd space.

as I have a 2tb hd, didn't want to swap that one!

but just wanted to migrate dcs to its own drive, I take it you only move dcs not all your liveries etc unless you have room?

ones I have seen are 3.1 usb with 540 mb/s that ok?

If your notebook has a dvd drive, you can install the SSD on its place, using an adapter like this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817986025&cm_re=Ssd_caddy-_-17-986-025-_-Product

Be sure to select one that fits your notebook, as they can be 12.7 or 9.5 mm thick. State the make and model of notebook and then I can be more specific.

If you still use the DVD (tough that is very rare these days), you can replace it with an external DVD drive as they are very cheap and can work very well over USB.

This will allow your SSD to work on a SATA interface and have much much higher performance than trough USB.

For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra

For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar

Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB

Well I think most of DCS is best loaded to VRAM and RAM when starting I mean I get sod all HDD/SSD activity after DCS has loaded, maybe USB 3 might help for an external HDD/SSD solution. :(

Yes could help, but for me I get about 6GB RAM usage for DCS and about 8GB VRAM with DCS in RIFT with little to no HDD/SSD activity after loaded except maybe some HDD/SSD in MP.

From what I can tell you would be better off replacing the internal SSD with a larger SSD.

See: External USB 3 SSD card versus internal SSD

"Just using USB 3 will not make it almost just as fast. You can get close by using USB3 with an enclosure which supports the USB attached SCSI protocol, but you will still add some overhead by involving the USB stack. Using raw access via PCI-e (M2.NVME SSDs) or SATA based SSD will always be faster."

I would definitely not run programs through USB 3.0, I do store things this way and it's very quick at copying things, I think you would have a much worse experience doing that and perhaps even add stutter to the game play running over usb 3.0.

I use one Samsung SSD in my Asus's DVD Bay, just as Rudel said. 7€ for the tray, a few screws and you are done.

I would avoid USB by all costs. It may have a high bandwidth if USB3.x but it will never have low latency on USB when it comes down to nano and milliseconds. For that you would need a Thunderbolt driven external housing, those have dedicated chips on either end of the cable, thus the cable is more expensive but far superior in any respect. No, go DVD tray and not USB.

Rudel_chw that's a great idea, thanks, yep I occasionally use the dvd, so an external one...or the old one I a box is better cheers for that

I havent seen adapter boxes for converting your stock dvd into an external one ... however, a new external drive is quite cheap, like this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135348&cm_re=external_dvd-_-27-135-348-_-Product

Your current DVD can be stored, so you can reinstall in the future if you ever sell the notebook, turning it back into its stock state ... the SSD and caddy could then be used on whatever new notebook you have at the time :)

Best regards.

btw, I lately did equip a new Acer with an SSD as it came with a 1TB HDD, lame as a duck.

Once I opened the latch underneath to get the HDD out and the SSD in I saw a "NVMe M2 slot !!!"

I never would have thought it has an empty M2 slot ready to go.

You might double check, maybe yours has that option too.

Also, check to see if your laptop has an M.2 slot. Were I you, I would get an SSD big enough for Windows *and* DCS. So that puts you in the 512GB SSD. You'll never go back to magnetic HDs.
