Hi F18 pilots !

is there a way to change the default viewpoint of F18 ? I would like to change the head rotation to see the 3 mirrors by default.

Thanks a lot

I have the (zoom in out commands) and (zoom reset = NumEnter) bound to a button all in very easy access on my HOTAS, being able to see easily and well for a sim like this is very important when dogfighting and finding ground targets etc.

From ED's wiki

Customising the Default View

Press Num5 to reset your view to the current default.

Adjust your view to what you want as the new default but do not use any snap view keys in the process!. If you have TrackIR, you will probably need to shut it off while doing this, otherwise it won't save the view the way you want it!

Press RALT+Num0 - your new default view should now be saved.

Test it by changing your view, then pressing Num5 - your view should return to your customised default!

NumPAD enter to reset back to the default zoom FOV you have set, after zooming in etc. (Bind this to your controller)

NOTE

(User save snap views can now be turned on in the options menu) Turn this on first.

Once you pause Tir if using it?

Then move your view by, see pic below. You can also then set your zoom FOV at the same time using Num/ and Num*

Press RALT+Num0 - your new default view should now be saved.

Thank you for this. I recently switched over to a 21:9 monitor and was looking for the proper way to mod the default view. Now I know. :)

Guys, this is one thing that drives me nuts, and did so in iRacing as well. That does NOT change your FOV. That changes you CAMERA position. People get this mixed up all the time. Your FoV is how much you see left to right, top to bottom, NO MATTER where the camera sits. You can move back and forth, up and down, all day long, but that does NOT change your FOV. It's literally the same thing as moving your car seat up and down, back and forth. Sure, you can get closer or further from the "dash", but it does not change how much you see natively left/right, top/bottom.

That's what the whole 90 degree, 180 degree, etc etc is about. THAT'S your FoV ;)

now, with all that said, can anyone tell me where the actual FoV settings are/in which LUA? I've been fighting this since I started playing DCS about a month(ish) or so ago and no matter which setting I edit, it doesn't seem to change jack squat, and I know ED changed the location, so all the posts I'm finding I'm thinking are for old settings. I'm still searching - That's how I found this posting ;)

My post above will also set a new default zoom FOV also.

You can see you FOV by hitting (Left control + pause twice) change FOV with (/) and (*) on NumPAD

Watch the FOV change top left of screen, I set it to around the 90ish. To look right it's about 70ish except it looks like your looking through a 27 inch box = My screen size.

Press RALT+Num0 - your new default view and FOV will now be saved.

Make sure user snap views is selected (Ticked) in the options. Pause Tir when doing this or you can mess up the view.

Thanks David OC, after 15 years of LOMAC-FC-DCS I never knew about the fact you could change the FOV in the game like that... I always thought one had to mess up with config LUA files...

BUT...

I dont know what I am doing wrong, but after I have adjusted the FOV as you said and did hit RALT-NUM0 (and yes the SAVE USER SNAPVIEWS is selected in options), when I unpause my Tir back to life, the FOV reverts to the previous setting... any idea whats wrong?

thanks!

I am having the exact same thing happen to me. There is no way to save the FOV. I use the method provided by David OC to get a FOV of 90 and then hit RALT+NUM 0. As soon as I touch the zoom axis on my HOTAS, it reverts back to the default FOV of 80. I have also tried editing the default FOV in the .lua files with no success.

Are you running any mods?

When I set up my default view I do not start TrackIR, perhaps that may have something to do with it... shrug.

Otherwise, for me RAlt+Num0 works fine for me.

No mods.

I tried setting up the FOV without TrackIR running but that did not work either. Does anyone else have any solutions?

UPDATE: I have found that I have to hit NUMPAD ENTER after the mission loads to get the FOV to 90; however, the FOV still resets to 80 if I use the zoom axis on my HOTAS.

Is there anyway to set the midpoint of my zoom axis rotary to be the FOV of 90 and not 80?

Okay everyone...I found the solution!!!

Go to DCS World\Mods\aircraft\FA-18C and open the Views.lua file and find the following line near the top...

CameraViewAngleLimits = {30.000000,150.000000},

The default values are 20, 150 which gives a midpoint of 80. I changed it to 30, 150 to give me a midpoint of 90 on my HOTAS zoom axis which now matches by default FOV of 90 that I set.

Hope this solution helps!!

Ah, you're using an axis with a middle detent. I just use the zoom in / out and normal keystrokes. Zoom normal always takes me back to my default view.

Thanks for sharing your solution. If I go to an axis zoom I'll keep it in mind.

This sounds great, but does the LUA file get overwritten with each subsequent update? I am trying to get the Cockpit FOV to match what looks about right and undistorted in the F2 over the shoulder view.

I think I figured it out...the NumPad Enter was crucial and I am testing various settings for my four main aircraft: Viper 71.0, Hornet 70.0, Huey 95.0, and P-51D/TF-51D Mustang at 70.0. Probably will tweak them over the next couple of weeks!
